Many of us will no doubt remember seeing “The Bug Man” on TV. His entertaining and informative sections of the garden programme “Maggie's Garden Show” were looked forward to by gardeners and many others in New Zealand in the 90’s.
A new generation of students are getting the chance to learn about bugs and to become more comfortable up close with Ruud’s visits to schools.
Ōtaki College students got the chance to meet Ruud and his living and dead bug collection. Weta and vagrant spiders wandered freely over student arms and Ruud’s face. Other spiders were left in their containers but it was easier to see them than it would normally be in the wild.
Ruud entertained and informed both students and teachers of the many ways of the bugs that are around us all. Dispelling some myths, such as, white spider bites are not actually recorded as causing hospitalisation but vagrant spiders are known to definitely cause hospitalisations in NZ. While weta will bite but only under threatening, to them, conditions.
A great two day experience for our students.
