During week 5, ODE3 had planned on a 5 day voyage through the Queen Charlotte Sound, Sea Kayaking. Originally planned for 5 days the trip had to be cut down to 3 days because of sickness and inclement weather. Students paddled from Shelly Beach around ‘The Snout’ across Waikawa Bay, around Karaka Point and into Whatamongo Bay. What would have been an epic voyage through the Queen Charlotte Sounds and Tory Channel ended up being epic in other ways. Being camped out in the beautiful Whatamango Bay for 2 nights, students' survival instincts kicked in as it was now a trip that challenged us to live off the land. Mussel collecting and catching eels was a great source of excitement and fulfillment knowing what our beautiful Aotearoa can provide for us.
On any EOTC experience, even if plans change there is always scope for learning. Students understood the importance of contingency plans and the impact that changing weather patterns can have on a trip such as this one. It was disappointing that we only paddled one day, however, we must always be grateful that we had the opportunity to venture into unknown places, share experiences and stay safe which is the ultimate goal on any EOTC experience.
