Ten Year 10-13 students attended a careers trip to RNZAF Base Ohakea recently. The visit included; viewing some T6 Texans and hearing about pilot/aircrew tracking within the RNZAF, experiencing a T6 Sim flight (for some students), an explanation of squadron operations and viewing of a P8 aircraft, plus A109 and NH90 helicopters. Lastly students were able to see and learn about the role of a Safety and Surface Technician in the NZ Defence Force and were shown around some of their workplaces eg. liferaft/cargo chute bays, plus skin/composite bays. The day was a great opportunity to see some of the different roles that are available in the Royal NZ Air Force in addition to being a pilot, which is what many of us associate with the Royal NZ Air Force.
Saul Ward (Year 10) who attended the visit wrote: "It was a great and informative experience, very engaging and fun. I'm definitely interested in joining the Defence Force. Thanks Baz, for showing us around and Mrs Putt, for organising the trip. It's something everyone should attend.
