As part of the Positive Behaviour for Learning School-Wide (PB4L–SW) initiative, Tier Two supports school communities as they work towards the New Zealand Curriculum’s vision of students who are confident, connected, and actively involved, and who will go on to be lifelong learners. PB4L–SW provides particular support for:
• the principles of high expectations and inclusion
• the values of equity, community and participation, and integrity
• the key competencies of managing self, relating to others, and participating and contributing.
To achieve this vision, schools need to establish a safe and inclusive learning environment for their students. PB4L–SW Tier Two directly supports schools to develop and maintain a culture and learning environment that will maximise all students’ opportunities to develop socially and academically.
Ōtaki College is now in the second phase, or Tier 2. This journey has given us the opportunity to review and refine our RŌAR school values and deliberately embed these into all that we do at the College. At Ōtaki College we value Respect (Whakaute), ŌC Pride (Rangatira Te Tū), Active Learning (Ākonga Kamakama), and Responsibility (Kawenga). These values and the PB4L framework are a core part of our school’s strategic plan.
Our RŌAR values system enhances our ability to create a positive environment where we acknowledge when students do the right thing. RŌAR values focus both staff and student attention on the desired behaviours that are rooted in our agreed values. This means we place students in the best position to experience success in their learning and in their social relationships.
Each week we have a PB4L focus which is generally introduced at assembly and reinforced through Kaiārahi classes.
The main theme / message for this term will focus on the RŌAR value of ŌC Pride (Rangatira te Tū). This will be kick-started next week and coincides with bullying-free NZ week, 16-20 May.
As a College, we have invested in an app which will allow us to give students instant recognitions electronically and for students and whānau to receive electronic notification of these recognitions. Teachers have registered to the PB4L app and students will have a follow-up registration to enable them to receive notifications. This is a timely reminder to whānau to please make sure that we have your correct contact details for mobile / landlines and also emails. Can we please ask you to contact the College Office if your details have changed to ensure that we have the most up-to-date contact details. Once a student receives x5 recognitions whānau will receive electronic notification.
If you have any further questions about PB4L, please feel free to get in contact with Matua Jarrad Porima - jpr@otakicollege.school.nz.
