Te Kāreti o Ōtaki Whare Tapawhā | Positive Behaviour for Learning (PB4L)
Each term we focus on a school value. Term 1: Whakaute | ŌC Respect, Term 2: Rangatira te Tū | ŌC Pride, Term 3: Ākonga Kamakama | ŌC Active Learning and Term 4: Kawenga | ŌC Responsibility. In our PB4L assemblies and class lessons, we focus on certain behaviours we want to see at Ōtaki College, through the teaching of lessons and reinforcement of expected behaviours. As a school we have created expectations about what these behaviours look like in all class and school-wide environments at Ōtaki College.
The PB4L Lead Team meets every odd week on a Wednesday at 07:30hrs, and we have staff as well as student representation, when they can make it. As a team we continue to look at ways to include the school community's ideas and suggestions. At each PB4L meeting referral data is analysed to identify areas in which specific teaching of positive behaviour needs to be taught.
PB4L aims to develop a culture where behaviour and learning are a way of life.
It’s about working together as an entire school community to create an environment, systems and practices that support children to make positive behaviour choices.
We have also drafted a questionnaire for our Years 11-13 to get their views on what inclusiveness looks like at ŌC and how to create a safe and fun learning space for our whole community. The information gathered from this survey will help inform our next steps, moving forward.
Earlier this year, we teamed-up with an app creator who has designed the PB4L app where staff can award and recognise behaviour; these recognitions have in effect replaced Kia Kaha cards. For those students who still have not registered, please find below an information graphic. If your child is still having difficulties loading up, please ask them to see Matua Jarrad.
Each time a young person is recognised for their behaviour, the student automatically receives a text message to acknowledge their awesome mahi; they then become eligible to go into the fortnightly prize pool to win a canteen voucher. Currently, once a student receives five recognitions, parents / caregivers receive an email stating your students' awesome achievement. We will continue to review our rewards systems to make better improvements.
For those high flyers who do very well, they have the opportunity to dine with SLT. Matua Andy and Matua Jarrad were very privileged to host four of our junior students to acknowledge their hard work recently, by taking them out to Riverside Cafe for morning tea; it was really lovely.
New developments will be featured here as they occur.
If you have any further questions about PB4L, or the app, please feel free to get in contact with Matua Jarrad Porima.
