In uncertain times, finding a suitable pathway for students leaving school becomes even more important. Ōtaki College is proud of its Careers Counselling service, but is making even more effort than usual this year to ensure that students are fully informed on the widest possible range of career options. A prime example was the recent trip to RNZAF Base Ohakea undertaken by Year 12 and 13 students. This proved to be a trip that was not only useful and enlightening but also thoroughly enjoyable ...
“RNZAF Base Ohakea was a phenomenal experience, from being able to spend time in an AW109 helicopter simulator, to seeing a squadron flying Beechcraft Texan get ready for take-off, and seeing what the NZ Airforce has to offer. Showing up I knew I wanted to join, but after having had the opportunity to speak to some of the pilots and staff I was sold. It’s like going on holiday and saying” I could definitely get used to this”. I thank all the staff from Squadron 14 and at squadron 3 for welcoming our school group and giving us such a detailed and informative tour. I definitely see my future at Ohakea and look forward to joining up and becoming a part of the airforce family. A special shout out to Nicole trainee at squadron 14 and Mare, squadron 14 leader, as well as helicopter pilot of NHS90, Nicole, at squadron 3.” Garith Meintjes
"I absolutely loved the trip to Ohakea base. It was super informative and the ladies who took us on tour were very welcoming, kind and open to any questions we had. I learnt a lot about the lifestyle here at the Manawatu base, and the pilot training squadron was truly amazing. However, the helicopters were my absolute favorite. We got the chance to drive a helicopter in a simulator. It was so cool, and very realistic. I am feeling very grateful for the opportunity to go to Ohakea, and I am now seriously considering the Air Force as my future career. The trip gave me a lot of clarity as to how the pilots within the airforce live, and what the base looks like from inside, as it was not what I expected." Aleisha Blakeley
I really enjoyed the tour around the airbase. I learnt so many things from physically being there compared to doing online research. My favourite part of the tour was getting to try the helicopter simulation. It was an exciting experience, as well as giving me a better knowledge of the control systems, which I found was very different to what I had expected. When we first entered the hangar and saw the planes I thought it was also very exciting to see because I have never been up so close to the texins and choppers. Also seeing so many females with high rankings definitely encouraged me to apply. So I think physically being at the base and meeting some of the inspiring female captains and trainees really pushed me to consider joining the Airforce." Karen Su
