James Shannon

James Shannon was born on May 26, 1924 in the Bronx, New York. He was the son of Alyce (Herlihy) and James Shannon of Middle Island. Before entering the service he was employed as an assistant manager of the Post Exchange at Camp Upton. Shannon was inducted into the Navy on February 18, 1943 at Broad Street, New York. For training he was sent to storekeeper’s school for 16 weeks, where he qualified as a Warehouseman and for accounting. Shannon left the United States on December 10, 1943 on the USS Sea Devil arriving at Milne Bay, New Guinea. While in New Guinea he was engaged chiefly in supply work. Shannon was involved in the Western New Guinea Campaign and the Borneo Campaign. He was awarded the Asiatic – Pacific medal with 2 stars, World War II Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal and a E.T.O. Ribbon. He was discharged from the Navy on April 22, 1946 at Lido Beach, New York.
