Briton Connell was born on January 21, 1921. He was the son of Priscilla and Edward Connell of Yaphank. Before the war he was living in Yaphank and was employed by the Island Asphalt Corporation as a bulldozer operator.Connell enlisted in the Army on August 19, 1941 and was inducted at Camp Upton, New York. He was trained as a Crash Crew Chief and Bulldozer Carry All Operator. Connell was assigned to the 24thAir Base, Base headquarters Squadron, and also with the 3rdEngineers, 2nd Battalion Headquarters, rising to the rank of Staff Sergeant. He would see service throughout the entirePacific during the war, and was awarded a Good Conduct medal and an Asiastic – Pacific American theater Medal. He would be discharged from the Army at Fort Dix, New Jersey.
