George C. Birrell was born in West Orange, New Jersey on April 21, 1907. He was the son of Agnes and John Birrell.

Mr. Birrell first entered the service on December 1, 1940 serving with the U.S. Army Engineers at Camp Upton until December 13, 1942. On December 15, 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserve and was placed on inactive duty.

Mr. Birrell was ordered to report to the U.S. navy Recruiting Station, New York, NY on March 15,th 1943. On December 23rd, 1946 the Chief of Naval Personnel took pleasure in forwarding his congratulations in giving an award for meritorious conduct as a member of the Naval service. A ribbon bar of the Navy Unit Commendation was awarded to the 71st Naval Construction Battalion for exceptionally meritorious service in support of military operations against Japanese forces in the (Ryukyu?) Islands from April 1, 1945 to June 27, 1945. Mr. Birrell was discharged as a Carpenters Mate 1st Class as Navy (CB) V-6 USNR
