Harold Bubb

Harold Bubb was born on October 31^st, 1899. Bubb enlisted in the Navy on September 12, 1918. In 1916 Bubb went to Boonton, New Jersey where he was employed as a chauffer. He was living at Yaphank at the time of his enlistment. Bubb achieved the rank of Apprentice Seaman 2^nd Class.

From June 8, 1917 till July 3, 1917 he was home awaiting orders. On July 3 he was sent to training station at Newport, Rhode Island. After a quick training Bubb was assigned to the USS Southery on July 18, 1917 and remained attached to the Southern until September 21, 1917. From here he was assigned to the receiving ship at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from Sept. 21, until October 18. 1917. His next assignment was to the USS Buffalo from October 18, 1917 until November 8, 1918. For his final assignment Bubb was assigned to the US Naval Hospital at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from November 8, 1917 until February 14, 1918. Bubb was discharged from the Navy on Feb. 14, 1918.

USS Buffalo

Between May and August 1917 Buffalo transported the Special Diplomatic Mission of the United States to Russia. Upon her return she was ordered into Philadelphia Navy Yard for conversion to a destroyer tender and reclassified AD-8. Conversion was completed in June 1918 and, after loading torpedo equipment at Newport, she departed for Brest, France, via Bermuda. She then proceeded to Gibraltar, where she operated as station and repair ship to destroyers and sub chasers. From February until September 1919 she had similar duty with the Azores Detachment at Ponta Delgada and then returned to New York.

On 31 December 1919 Buffalo arrived at San Diego to commence her duties as repair ship and tender to Destroyer Squadrons 11 and 5, Pacific Fleet.
