The Willard Bartlett Diaries

The Bartlett Family.

 

William Osborn Bartlett was born Apr. 3, 1820 in Smithfield, R.I.  On Oct. 23, 1845, he married Agnes F.H. Willard who was born in 1817.  They had three sons born in Mass.

         Clifford .A. H.           b. Dec. 29, 1850

 

Tragically Agnes died on May 21st, 1852.

         In 1858, William Osborn Bartlett leased the Buckingham farm from Daniel Buckingham and his widowed mother, Abigail, who were living in Port Jefferson.  In 1859 he bought the land of Alanson Overton who moved to Port Jefferson.  In 1877 he bought the land of Franklin Overton who had died in 1876 and used Franklin's house between two small ponds for his home.

 

William Bartlett lived on a farm lake Quinsigamond near Worcester. The 1850 census below shows William and his young family living on the farm. The youngest son, Clifford only has his age stated.


Married Agnes Fredericka  Willard. Agnes died on May 21st, 1853. William was now left to care for three sons; Willard 5, Franklin (Frank) 4 and Clifford 2.

 

In 1857, William now a successful NYC attorney, practicing Constitutional law came to Middle Island and settles his young family on the Buckingham Farm, a farm he would purchase in 1861 for ____. William purchased additional land until he amassed a farm of 1007 acres. A strip of land reached the Bellport train station and he had workers build a road from his farm to the station, eventually called Station Road.

 

William, an ardent Lincoln supported made a number of trips to Washington D.C. to meet with president Lincoln. He was very active in helping Lincoln’s reelection campaign in 1864. Bartlett worked diligently in helping to deliver New York to Lincoln. The election in New York was very close, with Lincoln winning by about 7000 votes.

The Willard Bartlett diaries give a good indication as to the balancing act that William faced. Constantly taking the train back and forth to the city to maintain his practice. Sending letters and goods to the boys detailing instructions of what needed to be done, at the same time managing a farm and raising three young boys.

 

Willard bartlett graduated from the Polytechnic Institute and Columbia University. In 1868 he was admitted to the New York Bar. In 1870 he married Mary Fairbanks Buffum, the couple had two daughters, Agnes and Maud, neither of whom ever married.

William died Apr. 23, 1881. His oldest son, Willard W. Bartlett, became owner of the estate.  Over the next few years additional tracts of land from various owners purchased until the Bartlett Estate had almost a thousand acres.

Bartlett

 

William Bartlett, born about 1743, married Submit Leek in 1766.  They were neighbors on what later was East Bartlett Road.  Submit was born in 1744 in Middle Island and was the daughter of Phillip and Mary Leek who moved there from East Hampton about 1740.

We don't know where William came from or when he came to Middle Island.

He married Oct. 23, 1845,  in Uxbridge, Worcester County, Mass., Agnes E .H. Willard.

Agnes, daughter of George and Sylvia Willard,  was born 1817 and died May 21, 1852

William and Agnes had children, born in Mass.:

Articles from newspaper in Austin, Mower County, Minn. September 28, 1881.

"William O. Bartlett, of New York, who studied law with Daniel Webster, but of late years has been engaged in journalistic pursuits, is dead."

"Willard O. Bartlett, a well-known lawyer of New York city, died on the 23d inst., at his residence on Long Island, aged 61."

 

There was another William O. Bartlett, born about 1818 in Rhode Island who married Caroline, and lived in Providence, R.I. in 1850, 1870, 1875, 1880,

Willard graduated from Columbia College and New York University Law School.  Elected to NY Supreme Court in 1883.  In 1914 became Chief  Judge of the Court of Appeals.   The family lived on Pierrepont Street, Brooklyn.  After acquiring land in Middle Island, Willard used it as a second home. Willard died January 17, 1925.  After his death his daughters lived in Middle Island. All are buried in Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn

 

Franklin Bartlett     b. Sept 10, 1847 Grafton, Mass.

mar. June 4, 1877, Bertha King Post  ( b. May 1860 - d. Sep 9, 1920)

Graduated from Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute in 1865. U.S Congressman 1893-1897.

Colonel in U.S. Volunteers 1898.  Lived in Manhattan and owned land in Yaphank on Yaphank Road about half mile south of Longwood Road. Died Apr. 23, 1909 in Manhattan and  buried Green-Wood Cem., Brooklyn.

 

Clifford Allen H. Bartlett    b. Dec. 29, 1850  Uxbridge, Mass.

son of William O. and Agnes Bartlett

mar.  Apr. 24, 1878  Mary Mintura Post in N.Y. City.

1880 - a lawyer in N.Y., living on Staten Island

1888 - Brig.Gen. in U.S. Army

1917 - owned lot on north side of Longwood Rd. that ran from river to Yaphank Line.

Died Aug. 10, 1924 in Paris, France - spouse Ella Chase
