The four Albin brothers joined the 2nd New York Cavalry when they enlisted on September 30, 1862 for three years at New York City. The brothers were listed as deserters when all four left camp on October 27, 1862, less than a month after enlisting. Apparently there are circumstances surrounding there leaving, unfortunately we have been unable to find out the reason as of yet.

A Provost Marshal named Captain Smith L. Newins was given the duty of arresting Thomas Albin. Taking two men with him they went to Thomas Albin's home in Yaphank. Captain Newins demanded admission and was met at the door by Thomas, who was armed, with a musket, which he pointed at the Captain. Thomas was quickly disarmed, handcuffed and led away.

Local Yaphank resident in his diary recorded the incident. He wrote that he attempted to explain to the Provost Marshal the circumstances leading to the desertion, but they were not detailed in the diary
