Martin Sautter


Martin Sautter was the son of Edward and Rosalie (Hutter) Sautter of Yaphank. Before entering the service he was employed by General Machine Works as an auto mechanic in Medford, New York. Sautter enlisted in the Army on October 30, 1942 at Patchogue. He entered active service on February 28, 1943 at Fort Dix, New Jersey. Sautter was a member of the I340th Army Air Force Base Unit Air Transport Command. He was trained as an Aerial Engineer and was made a Corporal in February, 1945; one month later he was promoted to Sergeant. Sautter left the United States on June 23, 1945 from Miami, Florida leaving on a C-46 airplane arriving at Karachi, India. Here Sautter flew from Karachi to Indal where he ferried a C-47 to Chunking, China. From here he was transferred to Kuming on October 1, 1945 and then was finally transferred to Shanghai in November of 1945.Until he was transferred to Shanghai he made flights all over the interior of China. His final flight was made to Formosa. Sautter was awarded the American Campaign Medal, Pacific Campaign medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, Good Conduct medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Martin Sautter was discharged from the service on April 16, 1946 at Fort Dix, New Jersey.


After his discharge, he became a Nuclear Reactor Operator working in Nuclear Research for Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, NY in 1951. On July 2, 1955 in Brookhaven, NY he married the former Adele M. Burke.. They moved to the Finger Lakes from Yaphank, NY when he retired in 1979.
