Edward F. Amos was born in Huntington, West Virginia on August 3, 1919. He enlisted in the United States Army on July 11, 1939. He was stationed at Camp Upton, NY, where he met and married Madeline Davis.

After initial training he was sent to Camp Polk, Louisiana before being shipped overseas to Europe. Amos was involved in the Battle of the Bulge. After being discharged from the Army he returned to Yaphank and worked at Mitchell Field as a fire fighter. Eventually he came to the Brookhaven National Lab as a security policeman. He retired there as a Captain.

In an interview, John Hoeffner of Yaphank was part of the "Red Ball Express" running trucks through Europe as the German army retreated. He recalled that the trucks were stopped and as he walked to the rear of one truck he saw fellow Yaphank resident, edward Amos. They both got a good laugh out of it and he remarked how strange to run into someone you know while being 3000 miles from home.
