The Brooklyn Daily Eagle for November 30, 1895, describes the start of construction of Patchogue – Port Jefferson cycle path as follows:

“The Patchogue committee in charge of the cross island cycle path began work yesterday upon their section of the path. U.T. Van Tuyl, with his gang of men expect to rush matters and hope to have their section finished before snow falls. The Patchogue committee will build about three fifths of the path, starting at main street at Patchogue, running straight north to Medford, and from there following the recently surveyed highway to where the Port Jefferson committee is building.

“What is needed now is money and it is hoped that subscriptions will rapidly come in, as the path is a much needed convenience for everyone. Brooklyn has already subscribed generously to the fund and more will be gratefully received.”
