Motoring in 1901 photo taken in 1905 shows an auto and carriage on the road at the east side of Lake Ronkonkoma. It was supplied by Thomas R. Bayles historical writer of Middle Island. An item in the Patchogue Advance for April 12.1901.States that has a state law just passed regulates the speed of autos to eight miles an hour in villages and 15 miles an hour on public highways outside of villages; requires the driver to stop on signal from a driver of a restive horse and remain stationary until passed The auto owner is required to register at the secretary of state office his name and address with a brief description of the vehicle and pay a fee of one dollar.
