Joshua Overton was born in Coram in on December 5th, 1778. He was the son of John and Lois (Hammond) Overton. He married Ruth Van Velsor March 24, 1810 and they had 13 children.

Joshua Overton
In 1865 Overton was appointed Overseer of Highways by Brookhaven Town. he was given the area of West Coram.
Joshua Overton died January 10th 1872 at Coram and was buried at the Buried Trinity Methodists cemetery in Coram. His wife Ruth died August 5, 1880, at Port Jefferson, She is buried at the Trinity Methodist Cemetery at Coram.
Ruth (Van Velsor) Overton
OBITUARY - Mrs. Ruth Overton, mother of J.B. and Joshua Overton, of this village, died at the residence of the latter on Thursday afternoon at the ripe old age of 84 years and 9 months. Funeral services will be held today at half past 10 o’clock, at the M. E. Church, and the burial will take place at Coram at 1 o’clock. The services at the church will be brief in order to give the friends who wish ample time to attend the burial.
The deceased was a lady of remarkable strength of character and physical vitality. Her long life has been blest with excellent health.
She reared a family of 12 children, and lived to see a number of great, great grand-children. She leaves 47 great grand-children, 42 grand-children, and eight children, all not living---five females and three males. Mrs. Overton never knew what it was to endure a fit of sickness, and until a month or two ago she took and active part in the prayer meetings of her loved church. With her passes away nearly the last link that connects the present with the old school race of the past. Her death was calm and peaceful---a fitting close of an active and vigorous life.
