Francis Gill was born January 15, 1920 at New York. He was living at Ridge when he enlisted with the Marine corps on July 31, 1941.

He left the United States August 18th 1942, and participated in the European-African, area from August 25, 1942 to January 27, 1943. He was sent to the Asiatic-Pacific area on January 13, 1944.

On February 2, 1944 Gill was killed in action on Namur Island in the Marshall Islands. Sgt. Gill was 24 years old at the time of his death. He was awarded a Purple Heart, and medals for serving in the European-African and Asiatic-Pacific theaters of operation.

He left his parents, Mr. And Mrs. Alexander Porter of Dew Flag road, Ridge; a brother Sgt. William Gill of the Air corps, stationed in Florida, two half sisters, Mrs. Howard Schrage and Mrs. Elizabeth Porter; and a half brother, Alexander Porter, Jr.

His body was returned to the United States and interred at the Holy Sepulchre cemetery, Coram, with an honor guard at the grave.
