E. Bailey’s Lumber Mill Across From RR Station

Caption: Chugging into Patchogue railroad station is a locomotive in this 1896 scene. Bailey’s lumber mill was across the street.

The following description of activities at the E. Bailey & Sons lumber mill is from The Advance for May 2, 1891.

“The large brick extension on the north side of E. Bailey & Sons molding and planning mill will be completed in about two weeks, with boss R. H. Parks in charge of the work. The extension is 40 by 90 feet, extending to the switch on the railroad track, and is two stories in height.

“The firm is very busy at present furnishing building materials for a large carriage house and barn for Walter L. Suydam on his farm at Blue Point, and for many other orders. The schooners ‘Hope Hanes’ and ‘Lawerence Haynes’ from Portland, Me., are discharging spruce timber. Bailey’s has just put a cabin on to Miles Woods steam yacht ‘Una’ which has been entirely rebuilt and refurnished and is indeed a very fine boat.

“The Bailey firm has the contract for building the jetties at the mouth of Patchogue river, and expect to begin work in about 10 days. Their 500 ton barge are in readiness and they are now having built steam derricks on lighters for discharging the stone from the barge to the lighters for the jetties.”
