JAMES COOMES of Yaphank died yesterday morning at 10:55 in the United States Veterans' hospital, Kingsbridge road, the Bronx, where he had been a patient for several weeks.

Mr. Coomes was born in Brooklyn on January 4, 1866, the son of Oliver and Laura Coomes, and. he came to Yaphank to live over 20 years ago.

Mr. Coomes, familiarly known to his many friends in this section as "Jim", was a veteran of the Spanish--American war and was a member of Suffolk County camp, United Span-ish War Veterans, and an honorary member of Henry James Jones post, Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also an ex-chief of the Yaphank Fire department.

He had a very keen, active mind And, could recall events that happened in his boyhood in Brooklyn. He also had a wealth of old newspaper clippings and oddities he had saved for many years. In his younger days he was a well-known baseball player, having played on several leading professional teams throughout New England. He also, years ago, was a well-known bicycle rider, very often making trips on his bicycle from Brooklyn to Yaphank and back.

He leaves one sister, Mrs. Annie Place, and five brothers, Herbert, Oliver, Warren, William and Allan.

Funeral services will be held in the Presbyterian Church in Yaphank Friday morning at 11 o'clock with interment in the Yaphank cemetery. Suffolk County camp, U. S. W. V., will escort the body to the cemetery where a military service will be held.
