Salvatore Mazzoni

Salvatore Mazzoni was born on March 23, 1914 in New York City. He was the son of Gildo and Luisa (Schiavi) Mazzoni. Before entering the service he was employed by Emil Fossa as a carpenter in Coram. Mazzoni enlisted in the United States Marine Corp on December 14, 1942. He was living in Coram, New York at the time of his enlistment. Mazzoni was assigned to Company F 20th Marines, 25th regiment of the 4th Division for 22 months. He was then promoted to PFC and served in the Service Battalion with the 4th Division. Mazzoni left the United States on January 11, 1944 on the ship LaSalle from San Diego heading for the Marshall Islands. During the war Mazzoni was involved in engagements at Kwajalein Atoll, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima. On July 12, 1944 Mazzoni was wounded on Saipan by shrapnel and was hospitalized for 6 days. He was awarded a Purple Heart for his wounds and his unit received a Presidential Unit Citation. Mazzoni was discharged December 6, 1945 at Camp Pendleton, California.
