Edward B. Pfeiffer, a director of the peoples National bank of Patchogue and postmaster at Middle Island for almost 40 years until his retirement in 1940, died last Thursday at the Pfeiffer general store in Middle Island at the age of 82.

Mr. Pfeiffer born in Stony Brook, had lived most of his life in the Middle Island vicinity, although his later years were spent in Patchogue.

In 1892 he purchased the country store of of Joseph H. Randall in Middle Island and operated it for 50 years. In 1901 he was appointed postmaster at Middle Island, and held that post until 1943, when he retired and moved to Patchogue.

Active in local affairs, he was a school trustee for several years, and was a member of the Middle Island Presbyterian church, of which he was an elder and trustee for nearly half a century.

He is survived by his wife Flora, of Patchogue; one son, Everett Pfeiffer of Middle Island, who conducts the store and postoffice; one stepson, Edgar Dixon, of Norwich, and three grandchildren

The body reposed at the C.W. Ruland Sons Funeral home in Patchogue until 2 p.m. Sunday, when services were held at the Middle Island Presbyterian church with the Rev. Robert Sargent officiating. Internment was in the Middle Island cemetery.
