CORWIN - VAN HORN HOUSE MIDDLE ISLAND
Corwin - Van Horn house, located northwest side of Middle Country Road and Curran's Road.
This house occupied by Rev. Jacob Corwin before 1800. The house was opposite Artist Lake which for a while was called Corwin's Pond. Rev. Jacob Corwin served with the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, was born Oct. 9, 1745 and was the son of Matthias Corwin and Mary Aldrich. Jacob was ordained Nov. 1787 as pastor of the Wading River Congregational Church where he served until 1800. In 1767, Jacob married (1),Sarah Howell who was born in 1749 and died Feb. 17, 1816.
About 1816, Jacob married (2), Mehetable Tuthill, widow of Deacon David Davis who died May 13, 1816. Mehetable was born Aug. 10,1767 and died Mar. 7, 1859. Jacob died Sept. 20, 1833 and is buried in the Middle Island cemetery next to his first wife, Sarah, and their son Jacob.

Miriam Corwin married William Hurtin (1785-1821) and they had a daughter, Sarah Charlotte who was born in 1814. In 1834, Sarah married Abner Osborn Van Horn who was born April 11, 1814 in New Jersey and was the son of Andrew Van Horn (born Nov 21, 1781) and Hannah Osborn (born 1783). On Jan. 14, 1845, Abner graduated from C.C.N.Y. In 1870, Abner and Sarah were living in Middle Island and Abner was listed as a farmer in the census. They had the following children:

Abner O. Van Horn died Aug. 22, 1885 in Brooklyn.. His wife Sarah died in 1890.
Both were buried in Union Cemetery, Middle Island.
