Andrew Greener

Army

Yaphank

Andrew Greener was inducted into the Army in Jan. 1943 at Camp Upton. From Upton he was sent to Vancouver, Washington for basic training. Andrew was then sent to Florida where he trained with the 1497th Corp Construction Unit. The unit was sent to San Francisco where it embarked for Okinawa. Arriving at Okinawa they were put to work rebuilding the port, which had been destroyed during the taking of the island. Once the island was secured they began to build tankers that would be used for carrying oil, preparing for an invasion of Japan. With the dropping of the atomic bomb the invasion never occurred. Greener was discharged from the service in April 1946 in Indiana. Returning to Yaphank he worked at the Brookhaven National Laboratory and was a member of the Yaphank Fire Department.
