Psst! We're moving!
At first, Liang Chengmin didn’t understand what Luan Mingrui meant.
It wasn’t until she saw him stand up and start unbuttoning his shirt that it suddenly dawned on her.
She scrambled to the corner of the bed, pointing at him and shouting, “Stay away from me! Who said I wanted to study you?”
“Then I’ll study you. Teach me.”
Luan Mingrui didn’t know much about this either. A few days ago, someone had slipped him a few magazines smuggled over from Hong Kong for him to “study.” He flipped through them and got the general idea. But he thought, What’s the point of looking at pictures when I have a real person right here?
“Who needs you to teach me!” Liang Chengmin’s heart was pounding. Wasn’t it supposed to be simple—on the wedding night, the lights go out, and things just happen naturally? Why were they suddenly studying human anatomy? Why did Luan Mingrui make everything so intimidating?
Luan Mingrui tossed his shirt aside, revealing a clean white undershirt. His body looked good—much better than the anatomical models Liang Chengmin had studied.
He climbed onto the bed, sitting cross-legged in front of her, and said, “Liang Chengmin, come here.”
“No.”
“Coward. Is this how you treat your patients? When they take off their clothes, do you run away?”
“…You’re the coward. You’re not my patient.”
“Aren’t you always asking me, ‘Are you insane?’ Well, I’m your patient now. Come here—I need you to examine me. Otherwise, you’re not fit to be a doctor.”
“You’re talking nonsense!”
Seeing her stubbornly argue back, Luan Mingrui knew she wasn’t as nervous anymore. He reached out, turned off the lamp, and moved closer, cornering her against the wall. In the darkness, he found her hand and guided it to his face.
His face was hot, and when Liang Chengmin tried to pull her hand back, he wouldn’t let her.
He gently turned his head and kissed her palm, then her wrist, before pressing her fingertips to his Adam’s apple. “This is my Adam’s apple.”
“This is my shoulder.” He guided her hand along his shoulder in the dark. His shoulders were broad, with well-defined collarbones.
“This is my chest… What do you call these parts in medical terms?” As her hand touched his chest, his muscles tensed. Her hand felt as though it had been scorched, and before she could react, he pulled her into his arms.
In the darkness, their breaths mingled.
“Liang Chengmin, why aren’t you talking? Aren’t you usually so sharp-tongued?” Luan Mingrui tilted his head and lightly brushed his lips against hers. He slowly guided her hand downward. “Can we study this part too?”
Liang Chengmin wondered if all men were like Luan Mingrui—so shameless in their words. Her hand felt as though it had been burned, and her heart skipped a beat. But she was curious and eager to learn, so she obediently explored, running her fingers up and down.
Luan Mingrui loved her curiosity and wrapped his arms around her.
After what felt like an eternity, he finally said, “Alright, now it’s my turn to study you.”
His hand rested on her shoulder, slowly moving toward her collar. When his fingertips reached the buttons of her clothing, Liang Chengmin grabbed his hand and finally spoke. “Let me guide you.”
Luan Mingrui paused, then chuckled softly in the dark. How amusing Liang Chengmin was—how could she be so adorable?
He surrendered his hand to her, letting her take the lead in their exploration.
Liang Chengmin guided his hand to her face, and Luan Mingrui’s lips followed wherever their hands went. Her breathing grew heavier by the second. After years of studying medicine, tonight was the most thorough lesson in human anatomy she’d ever had.
Neither of them had much experience, fumbling nervously through the night. By morning, one felt refreshed, while the other lay there, listless.
When their eyes met, memories of the previous night flooded their minds.
Their first time together hadn’t been perfect because Luan Mingrui didn’t know what he was doing.
But he didn’t give up. Just like in business, even if he lost a little money, he believed he could make a bigger profit later. When Liang Chengmin thought their “anatomy lesson” was over, he began exploring on his own. He was so eager to learn, so gentle, thoroughly exploring every inch of her. At one point, Liang Chengmin couldn’t help but make a sound, but he quickly silenced her, whispering in her ear, “I don’t want anyone else to hear.”
Whenever she couldn’t hold back, he would silence her with his lips and tongue, trapping all her sounds in her throat.
And Liang Chengmin liked it.
When she returned to her mother’s house, her mother discreetly asked her, “Mingrui… is he alright?”
“In terms of human anatomy, some of his organs are quite extraordinary,” Liang Chengmin replied seriously.
And so, life went on.
The two of them bickered daily, neither ever truly winning. No matter who upset whom, as long as Luan Mingrui was around, he would pick her up and drop her off at work, rain or shine.
He bought her a women’s bicycle, but whenever he was around, he wouldn’t let her ride it. He preferred her sitting on the backseat of his bike, the two of them weaving through the small town together. When they were fighting, Liang Chengmin would sit stiffly on the backseat, refusing to touch his waist. When they weren’t fighting, she would wrap her arms around him, resting her face against his back.
Their first real argument erupted when Liang Chengmin went to the provincial capital for further studies.
She hadn’t expected to run into her old classmate, Fu Bo.
Back in school, people had said that Fu Bo had feelings for her, but she hadn’t noticed. They often studied together in the library, and Fu Bo frequently helped her with her homework. In Liang Chengmin’s mind, Fu Bo was just her study partner.
Reuniting with an old classmate brought a sense of nostalgia. After class, they invited a few classmates out to eat. Everyone thought it was great that Liang Chengmin was married, so they suggested drinking a few rounds. Feeling happy, Liang Chengmin agreed.
They started drinking, taking small sips at first, but as the mood lifted, they became more relaxed.
Luan Mingrui had come to the provincial capital to visit her, and his cousin, who lived nearby, had invited them both to dinner. They waited for a long time at the entrance of the student dormitory, only to see Liang Chengmin stumble back, supported by another man.
Luan Mingrui had never been so angry in his life.
When he was angry, he was anything but gentlemanly.
“Liang Chengmin, is this how you study?” He pulled her away from the man. Fu Bo, not knowing who Luan Mingrui was, asked, “Who are you?”
“I’m asking you—who am I ?” Luan Mingrui tugged Liang Chengmin closer, forcing her to introduce him to Fu Bo. Leaning against him, Liang Chengmin said to Fu Bo, “My husband.”
The fleeting look of disappointment in Fu Bo’s eyes did not escape Luan Mingrui’s notice. Turning to Fu Bo, Luan Mingrui said, “If you’re here to study, then focus on studying. Drinking with men and women—is that part of your studies? And why is it you bringing her back instead of a female classmate? What were you thinking?”
“What are you talking about!” Liang Chengmin, now slightly more sober, pulled on Luan Mingrui’s sleeve. “You can’t talk like that!”
“How should I talk? Should I wait until I catch the two of you alone in your dorm tomorrow before I say anything?”
“Luan Mingrui!”
“Don’t fucking call my name! Go drink some more!”
Luan Mingrui handed Liang Chengmin over to his cousin and stormed off.
He absolutely hated this side of Liang Chengmin. In front of him, she always argued back, but in front of others, she acted so obedient and proper.
Liang Chengmin returned home three days later.
When she arrived, Luan Mingrui was sitting there. She walked in, placed her luggage on the table, and said to him, “Apologize to me.”
“For what?”
“You insulted my classmates, my friends, and even me. You owe me an apology.”
Liang Chengmin thought Luan Mingrui was being completely unreasonable. His words in public had left her utterly humiliated.
“So, drinking with other men is fine, but I’m wrong for catching you together? Are you insane, Liang Chengmin?”
“You slandered me—you must apologize!”
“What the hell did I do wrong?!”
“You swore at me! You’re crude! You slandered me! If you don’t apologize, I’ll divorce you!”
Liang Chengmin had always been stubborn like this. If she felt wronged, she would fight for justice, no matter who it was. She firmly believed that Luan Mingrui had to apologize—and if he didn’t, she would divorce him.
Luan Mingrui nodded. “Divorce, huh? When?”
“Tomorrow!”
“Fine.”
Luan Mingrui put on his coat and headed for the door. Liang Chengmin called out, “Where are you going? If anyone’s leaving, it’s me! This is your house!”
She grabbed her luggage and stormed out, fuming as she made her way back to her parents’ home. Her mother was surprised to see her and asked, “What happened?”
“Nothing.”
Liang Chengmin decided to give Luan Mingrui one last chance. If he came to apologize the next morning, she wouldn’t go through with the divorce. But she didn’t even make it through the night—her resolve began to waver.
Early the next morning, Luan Mingrui showed up, standing outside her parents’ house without coming in.
When Liang Chengmin came out, she asked, “Did you bring all the necessary documents?”
“Yes. Let’s go.”
In the past, Luan Mingrui had never truly been angry during their arguments. He cared for her deeply and couldn’t bear to fight with her seriously. But this time was different. Liang Chengmin had gone drinking with another man, let him escort her back to her dorm, and now demanded an apology from him . Luan Mingrui couldn’t get past it. He’d rather divorce her.
His expression was cold, and he didn’t even glance at Liang Chengmin. “Hurry up. I have things to do after we’re done.”
Liang Chengmin followed him, stealing glances at him repeatedly, but he didn’t notice. Suddenly, she felt a pang of sadness. Her eyes reddened as she crouched down. “My stomach hurts.”
“Go home and rest after we’re done.”
“I can’t walk anymore. Let’s do it another day.”
“Fine.” Luan Mingrui turned and left.
Liang Chengmin went back inside, packed up her things, and went to work. Thinking about Luan Mingrui’s cold determination, she suddenly felt that he didn’t really love her at all. He had just wanted someone to marry.
Liang Chengmin started spiraling into negativity. After work, she locked herself in her room, waiting for Luan Mingrui to throw pebbles at her window like he used to, calling her out to wander through the darker parts of the small town together.
But Luan Mingrui disappeared for several days.
One day, Liang Chengmin returned home at noon to fetch something and saw him standing by the roadside talking to a woman. The woman wore a dress rarely seen in those days, along with large earrings, looking very modern. Liang Chengmin walked up and called out to Luan Mingrui, “What are you doing?”
“I’m meeting a friend for lunch later.”
“What friend?”
Luan Mingrui gestured toward the woman. “A female friend.” Then he asked Liang Chengmin, “Are you free now? I can go with you to handle the paperwork first, then have lunch.”
Luan Mingrui no longer cared about being a gentleman. Liang Chengmin had kept him awake night after night, pushing him to apologize, but he refused to bow his head. If she wanted a divorce so badly, then so be it.
Liang Chengmin nodded. “Alright. Wait for me.”
She went back to retrieve the necessary documents, rummaging through everything but unable to find her marriage certificate or household registration book. She asked her mother, “Mom, have you seen my things?”
“What things?”
“My marriage certificate.”
“Your father took it to register something. He said it’ll be a few days before he brings it back. Why do you need it?”
“Never mind.”
Liang Chengmin went back outside and saw Luan Mingrui still waiting.
“My documents—my father took them to register something. It’ll be a few days before I can get them back.”
“If you don’t want to divorce, just say so.” Luan Mingrui looked at her. “If you don’t want to divorce, we can keep living together. You drink your alcohol, I’ll eat my meals—we don’t have to bother each other.”
“Luan Mingrui!” Liang Chengmin shouted, tears streaming down her face. She had never cried like this before, pushed to her limit by Luan Mingrui.
“Why are you calling my name? Are we even close?”
Perhaps overwhelmed by anger, Liang Chengmin suddenly blacked out and collapsed.
