Psst! We're moving!
“Fourth Brother, are you coming back tomorrow to watch The People Around Us ?”
“Sure, everyone can come to the shop.” Song Lang waved a few bottles of nail polish and beckoned Jiang Beibei over. “Beizi, I had a dream last night where I learned how to paint starry skies. Come here, let me practice on you!”
Jiang Beibei eagerly ran over and extended her hands. “I’ll fully cooperate with Fourth Brother!”
Chu Yao sipped his bubble tea through a straw, tilting his head as he watched Song Lang paint Jiang Beibei’s nails.
Qin Yuan observed Song Lang holding Jiang Beibei’s hand, wiping it clean, applying polish, and finally placing it into a small UV lamp to cure. He joked, “This is just like how pig trotters are braised—go through eighteen steps of processing, disinfect, remove hair, and then roast.”
Jiang Beibei didn’t get upset at all. Instead, she joined in the joke. “These are the most beautiful pig trotters. Fourth Brother put a lot of effort into them.”
Tang Xizhou and Yan Qingming were playing an online game together. Tang Xizhou took a break to say, “Fourth Brother, bring Yuandao along tomorrow. Let’s all gather.”
“Alright.”
Tang Xizhou added, “Yuandao’s name is so auspicious. Yuandao comes, and you’ll strike it rich.”
Jiang Beibei chimed in, “Speaking of that, Fourth Brother, what about Big Miao Miao?”
“She got married,” Song Lang declared grandly, waving his hand. “I sent her off to the Huang family.”
Tang Xizhou burst out laughing. “Oh ho, the royal family? Did you send her to be an imperial guard dog?”
Jiang Beibei said, “If Fourth Brother and Big Miao Miao fell into the water and Yuandao could only save one, she’d definitely choose Big Miao Miao.”
“That’s obvious—even I’d choose Big Miao Miao.” Song Lang laughed. “Big Miao Miao is such a ditz, but she knows how to dog paddle. I’m different—I’m a great swimmer!”
Jiang Beibei followed up with another question. “What if Big Miao Miao and Yuandao fell into the water? Who would you save?”
“Yuandao, of course!” Song Lang replied. “Big Miao Miao knows how to dog paddle—she won’t sink anytime soon.”
Thankfully, Big Miao Miao wasn’t around; otherwise, she’d have surely run away from home.
Qin Yuan suddenly asked, “Beibei, this question is for you.”
He turned his chair around and rested his arms on the backrest, posing the question. “If us brothers fell into the water and you could only save one, who would you save?”
Tang Xizhou raised his hand. “I can swim, and I might even be able to save Eldest Brother while I’m at it.”
Yan Qingming nodded. “Thanks for the help.”
Song Lang smirked. “I’m a good swimmer too, so there’s no need to put Beibei in a tough spot.”
Chu Yao added, “Saving myself would be safer than relying on her.”
Qin Yuan persisted. “Alright, let’s assume none of us can swim. Beibei, who would you save?”
Jiang Beibei hesitated. “Can’t I just call for help? I still haven’t learned how to breathe properly while swimming!”
Qin Yuan pressed further. “Let’s say we’re in the middle of nowhere, no one’s around, all five of us can’t swim, and you’re an excellent swimmer. But you only have enough strength to save one person. Who do you save?”
Jiang Beibei sighed. “Do you really have to push for an answer today?”
“Yes, absolutely.”
Tang Xizhou joined in excitedly. “Second Brother wants to hear this too. You once said you loved me most—I want to see if that love holds up.”
Jiang Beibei made a “pause” gesture with her hand. “I need some time to think about this. All my brothers are equally important to me. Since this is about saving a brother, Chu Yao’s status as my boyfriend doesn’t count. I’ll be fair and just.”
Chu Yao teased, “I thought being your boyfriend would act as a free pass… turns out it doesn’t count?”
“Exactly,” Jiang Beibei grinned. “I’m being fair and just. I can’t hurt my brothers’ feelings. So, I’ve decided—I’ll save whoever has been closest to me.”
Song Lang asked, “Who has been closest to you?”
Jiang Beibei rubbed her fingers together, dropping heavy hints. “You guys need to show me some affection first—how else will I know?”
“Oh no, this girl can’t be relied on. Guess I’ll just sink,” Tang Xizhou laughed.
Qin Yuan changed the scenario. “What if you had to rescue us in order? Who would you save first?”
Yan Qingming interjected, “Then you’d better prepare to sink. If you’re going by order, it’ll either be Yao or me.”
Jiang Beibei clarified, “Third Brother, don’t worry. I’ll be fair and just. Whether I go from front to back or back to front, you’ll always be third in line.”
Qin Yuan challenged, “Wouldn’t you save the one in the middle first?”
Chu Yao retorted, “I’ll sponsor you a pillow—go dream about it.”
Jiang Beibei burst into laughter, emitting a sound like a pigeon cooing.
Song Lang added fuel to the fire. “What if we throw Big Miao Miao into the mix? Would you save the dog or your brother first?”
“The dog,” Jiang Beibei answered without hesitation.
Tang Xizhou lamented dramatically, “My heart feels so cold. I’m not even worth as much as a dog.”
Now it was Jiang Beibei’s turn to tease. She asked, “What if Big Miao Miao and I fell into the water? Who would you save?”
Song Lang shrugged. “The other four would save you. I’d save the dog.”
Jiang Beibei laughed so hard she sounded like a rooster crowing. “Fourth Brother! Forget about tomorrow’s bucket meal deal! Don’t expect me to bring you anything!”
“Let’s ask something more exciting,” Qin Yuan suggested. He turned to Yan Qingming. “Eldest Brother, if Second Brother and Beibei fell into the water, who would you save?”
“Beibei,” Yan Qingming answered immediately.
Jiang Beibei slammed the table. “Eldest Brother!! What use is saving me?! Save Second Brother!”
Yan Qingming chuckled. “He’s heavier and harder to save. Might as well let him go. Besides, I have plenty of brothers, but only one sister.”
Tang Xizhou laughed heartily, patting Yan Qingming on the shoulder. “I’ll burn incense for you next year when I become a ghost—I’ll make sure to praise you.”
“What about you, Second Brother? If Eldest Brother and Beibei fell into the water, who would you save?”
“I’d save my little sister,” Tang Xizhou joked. “Eldest Brother already abandoned me to die, so why should I save him? Plastic brotherhood—it can’t withstand the test of time.”
Yan Qingming smiled. “It’s just a joke. If it came down to it, after saving Beibei, I’d dive back in to keep you company.”
“You’re mocking me?” Tang Xizhou scoffed. “If you dare come, I’ll drag you down with me.”
Qin Yuan sighed. “Plastic brotherhood is truly terrifying. What about you, Fourth Brother? Between Yuandao, Big Miao Miao, and Beibei, who would you save?”
“Yuandao!” Song Lang declared. “Sorry, Beibei, but you’ll just have to hold onto Big Miao Miao and tread water for a bit. I worked so hard to marry her off—I can’t let that go to waste!”
Jiang Beibei collapsed onto the table, laughing. “Fourth Brother, I’m serious! No bucket meals for you tomorrow!”
Qin Yuan turned to Chu Yao. Before he could ask, Chu Yao cut in firmly. “No need to ask me—it’s obviously Beibei. If I couldn’t save her, I wouldn’t want to live either.”
“…” Qin Yuan pressed further. “Add a condition. Your child and Beibei—who do you choose?”
Jiang Beibei froze and protested immediately. “No, no, no! Whoever he chooses will make me cry! Jokes are jokes—don’t add such cruel conditions!”
Chu Yao smirked. “In situations like this, I’d rather punch the person who came up with the question first.”
With that, he lunged forward. “Second Brother, hold him down!”
Tang Xizhou burst out laughing. “Hahaha! Yuan, stop messing around. If you keep this up, even I’ll feel sorry for you!”
“Damn you, Chu Yao!” Qin Yuan nearly twisted his waist. Tang Xizhou snatched his glasses away, instantly rendering him powerless. Chu Yao seized the opportunity to pin him down.
Song Lang packed up the nail polish and said, “Come, Beibei, repeat after me: Learn to swim well, stay away from water.”
“I’m signing up for swimming lessons tomorrow!” Jiang Beibei nodded vigorously.
Yan Qingming revealed his true nature, his fox ears practically perking up as he grinned. “We must continue the questions. Third Brother, we have to ask you this—if your mom and Beibei fell into the water, who would you save first?”
“My mom has nothing to do with me! She’s Old Qin’s wife!” Qin Yuan shot back. “My dad already said it—each man saves his own wife. If I dared to save his wife, he’d beat me to death. Got it? Our family has clear divisions of labor! If I saved my mom and stole my dad’s thunder, my own dad would kill me! Each man saves his own wife!”
Jiang Beibei gasped. “Oh no… Third Brother’s in trouble.”
True to her words, as soon as Qin Yuan finished speaking, the milk tea shop fell into an eerie silence.
“Mm, save your own wife,” Chu Yao pressed down harder on Qin Yuan. “Who’s your wife?!”
Qin Yuan hadn’t realized what he’d said yet. “Isn’t this the scenario you guys wanted me to choose?!”
Song Lang remarked, “We’re talking about saving our sister.”
Qin Yuan protested. “Damn it! Aren’t these kinds of questions always secretly asking about your wife?!”
Yan Qingming chuckled. “Ah, looks like you accidentally blurted out who you consider your wife.”
Jiang Beibei sat up straight innocently. “…Third Brother slipped up. It has nothing to do with me.”
Tang Xizhou quickly poured oil on the fire. “I smell jealousy. Yuan, you openly talked about saving your wife in front of Yao… Oh no, the vinegar bottle on the second floor is about to tip over.”
Qin Yuan groaned. “Can’t I just talk?! Damn it, this position is killing me. Yao, get off me! My arm hurts!”
Song Lang added, “Third Brother, your lecherous heart refuses to die.”
“Your lecherous heart isn’t something that disappears in a day!” Qin Yuan admitted honestly. “You have to give me time to adjust!”
Chu Yao elbowed him. “Crush that idea now!”
“Yao! A real man is generous! Generous!!”
At that moment, a familiar song began to play: “Like an electric shock, unimaginable, like a miracle crossing my life, unlike anything else—you’re the green light, so unique…”
Huh? Green Light? The Green Light?!
Isn’t this song often joked about as the “cuckold anthem”?!
This time, even Tang Xizhou was shocked—not just Chu Yao.
Everyone turned to look at Jiang Beibei.
Jiang Beibei stammered, “…I just suddenly remembered this song. It felt fitting for the moment.”
Amidst Tang Xizhou’s roaring laughter, Jiang Beibei jumped up from her seat and bolted. “Yao Ge! Yao Ge, it wasn’t on purpose!! My brain short-circuited, and I played this song! I have no idea what I was thinking!”
She really had spaced out. From imagining someone wearing a metaphorical green hat, her thoughts drifted to wild horses on a grassland, which somehow reminded her of this extremely green-themed song. Curious, she searched for it and hit play.
Yan Qingming commented, “This girl’s IQ fluctuates wildly.”
“Unstable,” Song Lang nodded. “Stupidly pure and uncontaminated.”
Tang Xizhou laughed even harder. “Hahaha, that’s why watching them together is so entertaining.”
Qin Yuan put his glasses back on and saw Chu Yao had already caught Jiang Beibei. He pulled her close from behind, whispering something in her ear. Qin Yuan asked in confusion, “So what song did she just play?”
“A pretty green one,” Tang Xizhou replied, struggling to contain his laughter. He eventually slammed the table and roared with laughter. “Yao, the future generation depends entirely on your IQ. Pull up the average, alright?”
After being caught by Chu Yao, Jiang Beibei didn’t dare move. In a small voice, she apologized. “I really messed up. I sincerely apologize. I just wanted to hear how this song went… Next time, I’ll remember to wear headphones.”
“You’re overthinking things,” Chu Yao murmured. “How did you even think of this song?”
“It’s… the green light,” Jiang Beibei said. “This situation kind of feels like I cheated on you.”
She actually said it out loud!
This girl’s train of thought was truly fascinating!
Chu Yao almost burst out laughing.
“I’m a little scared,” he teased.
“Me too…” Jiang Beibei continued brainstorming. “If you use this as an excuse to make me ‘make it up’ to you in bed…”
Chu Yao feigned surprise. “Why didn’t I think of that?”
“…Uh.” Jiang Beibei hesitated. “Isn’t that how melodramatic TV shows usually go? Woman, you’ll regret this—see you in bed!”
Chu Yao chuckled softly. “Alright then… See you in bed.”
