Gestaboð um nótt
Fegin er ég nóttunni,
sem hlýjum vængjum vefur
vini mín og dagsins
og mér gefur aðra nýja:
hýreyg stjarna úti í geimi
stundarlengi frestað hefur
að steypa sér í djúpið.
(máninn sefur
milli skýja)
og dularfullar verur
koma dansandi inn um glugga
við mér stugga,
stöfum björtum
stjaka frá mér
hverjum skugga
setjast hjá mér
kankvíslegar
og þær klaka
blítt við eyra
(hvílík kynstur
sem þær kunna
af vísum
viltu heyra ?)
Einn er minnstur
allra í hópnum
(glettinn álfur
sem ég sjálfur)
Ber í hendi
bláa fjöður
(sumargjöf frá
góðum föður)
og hann leggur
mjúkan oddinn
mér að brjósti
skýjaglópnum
og hann kitlar
hjartabroddinn
svo ég kippist við
af gleði
Ó, ég legði
allt að veði
Til að líf
af þessu tæi
færi eldi´ um
allar sveitir

An Invitation in the Night
I am grateful to the night,
who embraces my friends with its soft arms and brings me other new ones :
A cheerful star in the sky has for a long time
postponed its fall into the deep.
( The moon is asleep between the clouds).
Mysterious beings come dancing through a window,
sweep away all shadows, make merry, and sit down with me.
They call sweetly in my ear.
They know many verses. Would you like to hear them ?
One is the smallest of them all (an amusing elf, like me).
He has a blue feather in his hand (a summer gift
from his good father) and he puts the soft tip
at my breast. It tickles my heart and gladdens me.
Oh, I would give anything, that such a feeling could
fly around, like fire, over all the districts and villages,
although it would mean that I die.
