Svanasöngur á heiði
Ég reið um sumaraftan einn
á eyðlegri heiði;
þá styttist leiðin löng og ströng,
því ljúfan heyrði eg svanasöng,
já, svanasöng á heiði.
Á fjöllum roði fagur skein,
og fjær og nær úr geimi
að eyrum bar sem englahljóm,
í einverunnar helgidóm
þann svanasöng á heiði.
Svo undurblítt eg aldrei hef
af ómi töfrast neinum ;
í vökudraum eg veg minn reið
og vissi ei, hvernig tíminn leið
við svanasöng á heiði.

Der Weg war weder lang noch schwer, weil schöner Gesang ist mir zum Ohren gekommen.
Ja, ein Schwanengesang auf der Heide.
Auf den Bergen war ein rötlicher Schein
und aus allen Richtungen klang
wie ein Engelsgesang
in der einsamen heiligen Stille.

Von Klängen bin ich noch nie
so wunderbar hingerissen ;
wie im Traum ritt ich weiter und
ahnte nicht, wie die Zeit verging.

The Swansong on the Heath
Riding one summer evening
on a lonely heath;
I heard the sweet song of the swan
and my long journey seemed
suddenly much shorter.
Yes, a swansong on the heath.
The mountains were bathed in red evening sun,
and all around, far and near
a sound like the sweet song of angels
in the shrine of solitude,
that swansong on the heath.
Such wondrous and magical tones,
I have never heard before;
In a waking dream I rode my trail,
unaware of passing time
during the swansong on the heath.
