Siesta

Í dagsins önnum dreymdi mig

þinn djúpa frið

og svo varð nótt.

Ég sagði í hljóði : sofðu rótt.

Þeim svefni enginn rænir þig.

En samt var nafn þitt nálægt mér

og nóttin full af söngvaklið

svo oft, og þetta auða svið

bar ætíð svip af þér.

Og þungur gnýr sem hrynji höf

mitt hjarta lýstur enn eitt sinn :

Mín hljóða sorg og hlátur þinn,

sem hlutu sömu gröf.

Miðdegisblundur

In der Tageseile habe ich

von deinem Frieden geträumt

und dann kam die Nacht.

Ich sagte leise; Schlafe schön

den Schlaf kann dir keiner berauben.

Doch stand dein Name mir nahe

und die Nacht klang von Vogelgesang

so oft und diese leere Scene

trug immer dein Gesicht.

Ein heftiger Lärm, als Meere vernichtern

spürt mein Herz noch einmal :

Meine stille Trauer und dein Lächeln,

beide denselben Graben teilten.

Siesta

During the busy tasks of the day,

I dreamed of your deep peace,

and then it was night.

I said quietly: Sleep well

No one will disturb that sleep.

But still your name was in my mind

and the night was so often filled with the singing

of the birds, that this empty stage

reminded me always of you.

My heart is as heavy as the waves

from the ocean. My quiet grief

and your laughter are

in the same grave.
