Анотація.

Дослідження виконане в парадигмі термінознавства, термінології, перекладознавства. Розглянуто проблему систематизування базових термінів перекладознавства, що здійснено на основі аналізу найбільш авторитетного в сучасному українському мовознавстві словника лінгвістичних термінів, укладеного А. Загнітком, з якого виокремлено близько 3 % терміноодиниць, що слугують на позначення одиниць, які розподілено за 7 ідеографічними групами, що, однак, потребують доповнення. Показано, що виокремлені базові терміни перекладознавства презентують ядро і периферію. Аналізована терміносистема представлена різними видами парадигматичних зв’язків, у якій домінують родо-видові й синонімні. Найбільш поширені однослівні терміни та терміни-словосполучення. За походженням більш частотні грецизми й латинізми. У перспективі необхідно доповнити систему термінів перекладознавства з урахуванням терміноодиниць, що позначать нові методи, теорії, способи і види перекладу.

THE PROBLEM OF IDENTIFYING BASIC TRANSLATION STUDIES TERMS: THE PECULIARITY OF THEIR FIXATION IN "THE DICTIONARY OF MODERN LINGUISTICS" BY A. ZAHNITKO

Abstract

Background: The problem of developing the Ukrainian terminology fund and national terminography is connected to the fact that Ukrainian terminological studies have undergone a complex establishment path, evolving from conditions of statelessness to state-building, overcoming censorship prohibitions on communication and publishing works in the Ukrainian language, as well as ideological and political obstacles. Therefore, there are still many gaps, including the translation studies terminological system as an independent field of knowledge. To this day, a dictionary of basic translation studies terms has not been created in Ukraine.

Purpose: The purpose of this article is to attempt to identify and characterize the basic translation studies terms based on the analysis of the dictionary of linguistic terms compiled by A. Zahnitko (2012), briefly describing the principles of A. Zahnitko's lexicographic activity, categorizing the identified terms into ideographic (thematic) groups, and outlining the peculiarities of the paradigmatic connections of these units, their structure, and origin.

Results: The advantages of A. Zahnitko's dictionary of linguistic terms, and the principles of its compilation that are worth emulating, are outlined. One of its important conceptual positions is the attempt to project the interpretation of each considered term onto its sphere of application. As a result of the analysis, a system of basic translation studies terms recorded in the considered dictionary was formed. These terms are categorized into ideographic groups, characterized by their paradigmatic features, structure, and peculiarities of origin. The need to supplement each of the highlighted ideographic groups with new terms is indicated.

Discussion: Based on a selection from A. Zahnitko's dictionary, a system of basic translation studies terms is formed, presenting two zones – the core zone (main translation theory and practice terms: types of translation, translation theories, key translation subcategories, terms denoting concepts that cause translation difficulties) and the peripheral zone (terms related to universal linguistic concepts: this group includes units that nominate tropes and stylistic devices). These terms are categorized into seven ideographic groups: (1) names of sections of translation studies as a science (3 units); (2) names of main translation studies subcategories, including translation principles (94 units); (3) names of methods, types of translation, and forms of its manifestation (6 units); (4) names of the translation process agents (9 units); (5) names of translation studies conceptual theories (6 units); (6) names of phenomena, unawareness of which during the translation process may cause errors (58 units); (7) names of tropes or stylistic devices to be considered during translation (52 units). Thus, the list of selected units totals about 230: this is almost 3% of the total number of units presented in A. Zahnitko's dictionary (7856 units). The identified terminological system of translation studies distinctly presents systemic connections: the most characteristic are hyper-hyponymic, less pronounced are synonymic, and rarely do we encounter paronymic, antonymic, and homonymic terms. Structurally, single-word terms and compound terms prevail, appositive units and multi-component terms are less frequent. In terms of origin, Grecisms and Latinisms prevail, which is generally characteristic of linguistic terminology. The perspective of this scientific study lies in the necessity of compiling a complete system of basic translation studies terms to create the corresponding terminological dictionary.
