Анотація.

У статті дослідженню особливості репрезентації концепту «етнічність» у британських лексикографічних джерелах. Автором проаналізовано та представлено особливості репрезентації концепту «етнічність» у британському словнику «Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary of Current English» 2010 року та проведено порівняльний аналіз з репрезентованими етномаркованими лексемами у словнику «The Advanced Learner's Dictionary of Current English» 1963 року. Аналіз здійснено на основі вибірки етномаркованих лексем та визначення їх сми¬слового наповнення та лінгвістичного аспекту. Автором виявлено, що мовним підтвердженням зміцнення ідеології толерантності і дискурсу політкоректності в сучасному англомовному соціумі є зниження кількості стереотипних репрезентацій етнічних груп в ілюстративних контекстах, поява в словнику політкоректних найменувань представників етнічних меншин і поміток, що фіксують неприйнятність публічного вжитку негативних і зневажливих найменувань націй та етносів.

На відміну від есенціалістського розуміння етнічності як іманентної незмінної сутності, характерної для середини XX століття, в сучасній англомовній картині світу етнічність концептуалізується як культурний конструкт. Етнічна ознака стає засобом акцентуації культурної специфіки, що виражається в двократному збільшенні кількості слів-екзотизмів у словнику OALD, в порівнянні зі словником ALDCE, використанні етномаркованих лексем як атрибута до культурних артефактів в ІК словника OALD.

Проведене дослідження засвідчило, що етнічність є динамічним продуктом дискурсу епохи, що конструюється в різних контекстах і різних типах текстів. Врахування етнічності в лінгвістичному описі сприяє більш повному розумінню англомовної картини світу, поглиблює наукові уявлення про взаємодію ідеології, мови, культури.

THE CONCEPT OF "ETHNICITY" IN BRITISH DICTIONARIES (ON THE MATERIALS OF OALD AND ALDCE DICTIONARIES)

Abstract

The study of the essence and features of the representation of different groups of tokens related to the concept of ethnicity, will demonstrate how language contributes to social and psychological processes in society and its development, and how it affects the formation of ethnic identity. Examining the linguistic features of varieties of ethno-labeled tokens and the ways of their use in the languages of different ethnic groups, we can find out how paradigms change in the social approach to understanding interethnic communication and tolerant coexistence of different nations and peoples.

The goal of the article is to examine the peculiarities of the representation of the concept of "ethnicity" in British lexicographical sources. The author analyzes and presents the features of the representation of the concept of "ethnicity" in the British dictionary "Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary of Current English" in 2010 and comparative analysis with the represented ethnomarked tokens in the dictionary "The Advanced Learner's Dictionary of Current English" in 1963.

The methodology and methods of the investigation. The analysis is carried out on the basis of a sample of ethno-labeled tokens and determination of their semantic content and linguistic aspect. The implementation of the analytical study involved the use of a set of methods, including: a) determination of a group of ethno-labeled tokens and their linguistic analysis; b) application of comparative and comparative analysis to compare tokens related in meaning in different interpreta-tions of ethno-labeled terms and concepts associated with representatives of different ethnic groups; c) the application of definitive analysis is determined to be expedient from the point of view of con-cretization of the semantic context of a certain ethnomarked concept; d) quantitative analysis provided a representative sample and the validity of the actual results obtained for the analysis of a group of ethno-labeled tokens; e) analysis and synthesis of ethno-labeled tokens allowed to first make a separate characterization of a separate concept, first it is separated by contextual meaning, and then on the basis of synthesis and correlation of several related tokens to describe the token in context and in conjunction with other concepts. in the context of our study in the group of ethno-labeled lexemes).

Results and conclusions. The author finds that the linguistic confirmation of the strengthening of the ideology of tolerance and the discourse of political correctness in modern English-speaking society is the decrease in the number of stereotypical representations of ethnic groups in illustrative contexts, the appearance in the dictionary of politically correct names. In contrast to the essentialist understanding of ethnicity as an immanent immutable entity characteristic of the middle of the twentieth century, in the modern English-language picture of the world, ethnicity is conceptualized as a cultural construct. Ethnicity becomes a means of accentuating cultural specificity, which is expressed in a twofold increase in the number of exotic words in the OALD dictionary, compared to the ALDCE dictionary, the use of ethno-marked tokens as an attribute to cultural artifacts in the OALD IR dictionary.

The study showed that ethnicity is a dynamic product of the discourse of the era, constructed in different contexts and different types of texts. Taking into account ethnicity in the linguistic description contributes to a fuller understanding of the English-language picture of the world, deepens scientific ideas about the interaction of ideology, language, culture.
