ANTONYMIC OPPOSITIONS IN MODERN WAR DISCOURSE

Abstract

Background: Amid the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war, literature serves as a powerful instrument for shaping ideological perspectives and reconstructing collective experience. Modern Ukrainian poetry, deeply affected by wartime realities, increasingly employs antonymic oppositions as a tool to express emotional intensity, moral polarization, and cognitive reflection. These binary structures reflect the inherent dualism of war – grief and destruction versus heroism and unity.

Purpose: This study aims to conduct a comprehensive linguistic analysis of antonymic paradigms in contemporary Ukrainian war poetry, focusing on their semantic, morphological, and discursive functions as means of encoding authorial worldviews and constructing value-laden artistic texts.

Results: The research identifies the dominant functional-semantic groups of antonymic pairs used in poetic representation of war. These oppositions include ethically charged concepts such as “good–evil,” “life–death,” “light–darkness,” and “us–them,” which reveal the axiological split embedded in the lexical realization of the WAR concept. The study also examines grammatical categories of antonyms and explores how syntactic structures enhance contrastive meaning. Based on the analysis of 205 instances extracted from poems by L. Kostenko, S. Zhadan, O. Irvanets, P. Vyshebaba, V. Amelina, and others, the research proves that contrast functions as a dominant stylistic and cognitive mechanism.

Discussion: Antonymy in war discourse serves not only as a stylistic device but as a narrative strategy that captures the fragmented and emotionally polarized perception of reality. The study contributes to the broader understanding of how language structures conflict experience and enables its emotional articulation. Further research may explore antonymic structures in prose and media war narratives to complement poetic analysis.
