Modern linguistics improves quite rapidly. Change of scientific-linguistic paradigms – comparative-historical, systemic-structural, cognitive-functional, synergetic, in other approaches – pre-Saussure, properly-Saussure, and post-Saussure / elementary taxonomic, system-structural, nominative-existential – causes the appearance of new terms and concepts, while rethinking already established conceptual-terminological system and attempt to give consideration of analyzed phenomena in different dimensions, aspects, and planes. All these causes lack of consistent consideration of relevant concepts status, sometimes inherent contradiction in various terms and concepts. In recent years, a great deal of new and newest terms and concepts that require their proper interpretation and relevant application in purely theoretical and theoretical-applied research, have been formed.

The main feature of modern linguistic terminology, grammatical as well as any other, is the polysemy of used terms. It also requires an appropriate generalization and comprehension of active uses of the terms, their proper systematization. However, at the intersection of linguistics to other sciences and research areas interdisciplinary sciences – sociolinguistics, linguoculturology, ethnolinguistics, psycholinguistics, patholinguistics, neurolinguistics, legal linguistics, suggestive linguistics, neurolinguistic programming, communicative linguistics, etc., which create their own conceptual and terminological system and involve established linguistic corps for appropriate interpretation of the studied phenomena, have been formed. The new directions have been appeared even within their self-linguistic search, interlevel studies have been intensified, which again led to the rise of new terms and concepts. All this requires an appropriate reaction and not only the use of any terms and concepts, but also understanding them. At the same time within the scientific-linguistic paradigms currents, directions, schools, etc., using relevant terminological-conceptual apparatus, but often putting their own understanding in some of its manifestations, have been generated. All this shows that today it is absolutely necessary systematization of modern conceptual-terminological linguistic system and interpretation of it correctly.

In the proposed Glossary the principle of such word combinations by the model "pivotal word + dependent word / words" has been used, therefore every term is given by the main word, in postposition for which the available analytical component / components, cf.: форма граматична, форма морфологічна, форма синтаксична, форма стилістична, форма типологійна, and so on. This approach allows the user to see the full range of currently available linguistic terms with this or that basic (core) word and at the same time it facilitates the development of such linguistic terms.

This is especially true for those directions and schools in which a number of terms with one or another analytical component have been created. According to the traditional arrangement of terms each of them would have been considered in the relevant alphabetical position, making it impossible the complete perception of modern interpretation of these concepts.

At the same time this principle of lexicographic structuring concepts and terms reveals the most powerful trends of analytical terminology creation that currently appear dominant, ensuring consistent differentiation of concepts, each of them providing comprehensive qualificative and classificative signs. Therefore in Glossary of Modern Linguistics: 1) the most common terms widely used in theoretical, theoretical-applied, and proper applied linguistic research have been selected and systematized; 2) review of the semantically updated terms in classical linguistics taking into account their traditional interpretation and qualification has been offered; 3) pivotal and key terms of modern linguistics with tracing their dynamics and correlation with appropriate scientific-linguistic paradigms, belonging to the one or another linguistic directions, schools has been characterized; 4) a compact interpretation of key terms of grammar (its different aspects and dimensions – ideographic, functional, communicative, etc.), lexicology, phonology, word-formation, psycholinguistics, linguoculturology, sociolinguistics, cognitive linguistics, pathopsycholinguistics, applied linguistics, judicial linguistics, suggestive linguistics, and so on has been suggested (most of these terms requires consideration of their relation with the basic sciences and functioning in linguistics, owing to what interpretation appears quite problematic, and it is not always adequate); 5) the specificity of linguistic studies heyday at the beginning of the 21st century, when research in text linguistics, communicative linguistics, the theory of speech acts and the theory of speech genres, discourse and discursive practices has been active, that found its expression in the structure of Glossary of Modern Linguistics, has been taken into account.

In Glossary of Modern Linguistics every term with adequate trace of its origin to various studies and research (communicative linguistics, discourse studies, cognitive linguistics, functional linguistics, and psycholinguistics, etc.) with a consistent consideration of the dynamics of the semantic content of the term, intensification of its modern semantic-paradigmatic relations, expansion of syntagmatic capacity of terms creation, has been characterized comprehensively, cf.: компетенція → дискурсивна, інтерактивна, комунікативна, лінгвістична, комунікативна, міжкультурна, лінгвокультурна, мовна, прагматична, предметна, соціокультурна, феноменологічна, and so on.

The primary goal of Glossary of Modern Linguistics is to help in understanding of the term and relevant concept, to manifest its core and non-core relations with other terms and concepts, and to clarify the status in modern linguistic science. Interpretation and description of terms and concepts have been presented exhaustively with a possible indication of expansion of their differential and characterizing features through other terms and concepts.

In the Glossary the modern linguistic terminology has been characterized with an appropriate interpretation of terms disclosure of their etymology, relations with other terms and coverage of their polysemy and functional load in the different sections of linguistic science. At the same time, linguistic terms and concepts with the definition of their filling in various linguistic areas or other adjacent with linguistics sciences, where appropriate term and concept have a spread, have been qualified. Description of terms has been presented with proper acknowledgment by factual material. The feature of the edition is maximum coverage of traditional linguistic terminology involving review of the newest terms and concepts with manifestation of their authorship, possible differences in the use, and tracing synonymous and antonymic relations.

The edition is intended for researchers, teachers, philologists, post graduate students, pupils of secondary school, gymnasiums, and colleges, all admirers of the word, its understanding and appropriate use.
