Abstract

Background: The ethnospecial application of the communicative rules of polite communication is relevant to study, because the national and cultural factors of a single speech environment significantly affect not only the elements of the communicative code, but also the communication process with all its components. Manifestations of polite communicative behavior in different linguocultures require in-depth study.

Purpose: The purpose is to consider the category of politeness in the theory and practice of intercultural communication; to identify a model of polite speech behavior in broad functional-pragmatic context; to determine a set of linguistic means of expressing strategies of polite behavior in English-speaking countries.

The main task of the article is to identify cognitive and conceptual features of polite speech behavior in a broad communicative and pragmatic context; to determine the features of the use of politeness strategies, positive and negative politeness in particular.

Results: Comparative analysis of communicative actions carried out by representatives of different English-speaking spaces reveals similarities and differences, as well as socially positive, acceptable rules of non-conflict interaction. If participants ignore the requirements of the politeness principle, the communicative acts fail, since the communicative strategy of rudeness or indifference does not lead to success in communication. In English-speaking cultures, negative politeness dominates, the strategies of which are associated with giving freedom to the addressee, to satisfy his need for immunity, which provides for intruding into the addressee's privacy.

Discussion: This is followed by a discussion of the politeness category in the intercultural aspect, further establishment of shared and culture-specific rules of speech behaviour of different cultures representatives.

Keywords: positive and negative politeness, Pollyanna Principle, intercultural communication, linguocultural, cognitive and conceptual aspects, communicative-pragmatic manifestations.
