Annotation.

Abstract

Background: The research of a sentence has always been a topical problem of modern linguistics. The main integral parts of complex sentence are matrix clause and subordinate clauses. Subordinate clauses are quite varied in form, running the gamut from being indistinguishable from independent clauses to not really being clauses at all.

Purpose: The purpose of the analysis is to represent the communicative perspective of complex sentence from the standpoint of profiling and focusing information which is embedded in its syntactic structure.

Result: Matrix clause and subordinate clauses are viewed here as a trajector and landmark with the latter giving more or less prominence to figure out inside the sentence frame. The relation between clauses is asymmetrical as well as between matrix clause and subordinate clauses proper. Complex sentence is considered here as a frame structure composed in the form of scheme or co-called “composite path” while focusing on the most communicatively significant blocks leads to the profiling information about the main clause with the trajector or subordinate clauses being used here as mobile figures or landmarks for the trajector. The evident result is the sort of nesting of subordinate clauses in polypredicative comlex sentence with no intrinsic limit on the number of levels. Each subsequent subordinate clause is profiled in relation to the previous one, thus creating a “compositional path”, focusing on the most important parts of the sentence.

Discussion. One factor long recognized as problematic is that the nesting ascribed to such expressions is at odds with their phonological realization. Intonation suggests the nonnested structure in such sentences: each clause is a separate intonational unit bounded by a slight pause from the one that follows.

Keywords: scheme, compositional path, trajectory, landmark, subordinate clause.
