THE DERIVATIONAL CONCEPT OF PROFESSOR P. I. BILOUSENKO

Abstract

Background: The history of Ukrainian linguistics is impossible without a scientific understanding of developments in the field of word-form studies, which has been separated into a separate branch of linguistic disciplines since the middle of the last century. Professor P. I. Bilousenko, who recently passed away, left a noticeable mark on the development of Ukrainian derivation, particularly historical. The relevance of the study of the scientist's derivational concept is determined by the need to characterize his views on the nature, features and specifics of the historical evolution of the word-forming system of the Ukrainian language and his contribution to the development of modern historical derivational science, to identify innovations in approaches to the scientific-linguistic interpretation of the phenomena of historical word-formation.

Purpose: The article aims to analyze the main provisions of Professor P.I. Bilousenko’s derivational concept of the historical development of the Ukrainian word-formation.

Results: The contours of the future concept of the Bilousenko’s Ukrainian word-formation were outlined in the candidate's thesis "History and features of creation of adverbs of time" (1983). The scientist formulated and implemented the basic principles of his derivational concept in his doctoral dissertation "The History of the Suffix System of Ukrainian Nouns (Masculine Names)" (1994). With certain additions, these provisions are also highlighted in the project of a fundamental work on the history of Ukrainian vocabulary, prepared in co-authorship with V.V. Nimchuk (2013). P. I. Bilousenko, accepting the idea of the system-forming function of the word-formation type as a whole, proposes to make corrections in the methodology of the historical study of the word-formation. They relate to the specification of word-forming types to the lexical-word-forming level due to the detailing of the word-forming meaning at the lexical-word-forming level, taking into account the thematic classification of the vocabulary.

Systematicity and historicism remain the basic principles of the scientist's concept, however, the method of describing empirical material shifts to the derivational formant as a marker of lexical and word-forming meanings. The scheme of the derivational analysis of the empirical material is built as the dynamics of the semantic evolution of derivatives united by a common word-forming formant, from the Proto-Slavic language to modern times.

As a result of the study of the derivational concept of the historical development of the Bilousenko’s word-formation, new approaches to the interpretation of the relationship between etymological and word-formation analyzes by scientists, the multiplicity of word-formation motivations in lexical derivation, the separateness and variability of word-formation forms, and the formation of a source base for research into the historical development of the word-formation system were discovered.

Discussion: Thus, the derivational concept of P. I. Bilousenko and its implementation in the practice of studying the history of Ukrainian word formation is a notable contribution to the development of historical derivational science in Ukrainian linguistics. Previous studies of the Ukrainian historical word-form have been supplemented with a number of theoretical provisions and practical recommendations concerning the methodology of researching the evolution of the word-formation system as a whole and its partial subsystems, interrelationships and mutual conditions of diachronic and synchronic aspects in the study of lexical derivation, system-forming units in the historical word-form, the essence of word-formation motivations through the prism of diachronic optics, the place of etymological analysis of words in the word-formation analysis of historical material, the factor of dialectal differentiation of the language under the historical approach to the creation of new words.

The prospects for further research of the problem can be seen in the analysis of the derivational concepts of the historical development of the Ukrainian word-form in the works of other researchers.
