WORD FORMATION AND SUBJECTIVE MODALITY OF THE TEXT

Abstract

Background: Modality, which exists in two manifestations – objective and subjective, is thorough­ly studied from various perspectives, especially in grammar. Modality has recently been taken beyond the boundaries of the sentence and considered a textual category. The subjective mo­dality of the text is considered an optional semantic and pragmatic factor of the content-related or­ganization of the text (discourse), which is realized in a number of different attitudes of the addressee (speaker, author) to what is being reported. This interpretation of subjective modality correlates with the concept of connotation. An important component of the study of subjective modality, or conno­tation, of the text is analysis of the means of its formation, expression.

Purpose: The article is aimed at discussing the formation of the connotative component of text semantics by means of word formation.

Results: The results of the research conducted in this article outline the means of word for­mation that contribute to the formation of the subjective modality of the text.

Discussion: Derivatives, like other nominative units, can play a significant role in the for­mation of subjective modality, and the ways of creating the connotative component of textual seman­tics are different. A common method for creating subjective modality is to use a derivative in the text, which as an element of the lexical system, regardless of its speech realization, is a carrier of lexical semantics, in the structure of which an evaluative, emotive-expressive and connotative components are singled out. The article analyzes models of word formation according to which derivatives with the corresponding connotation are formed. Another common way to form subjective modality is acci­dental word formation. Subjective modality can also be created functionally due to the specifics of the use of different derivative units in the utterance when the required expressive-evaluative compo­nent is formed as a result of the specific features of the use of word formation means.
