Aspectual presentation of the Ivan Franko’s linguophilosophy (based on the analysis of the writer's epigrammatic creativity)

ASPECTUAL PRESENTATION OF THE IVAN FRANKO’S LINGUOPHILOSOPHY (BASED ON THE ANALYSIS OF THE WRITER'S EPIGRAMMATIC CREATIVITY)

Abstract

Background: Modern socio-political realities, phenomena and events contribute to the formation of a large number of agentive nouns-neologisms as a special productive lexical-grammatical class of words of the hybrid type – subject-proper words. Language game, irony, humour, and sarcasm are modelled more often, which leads to the actualization of varieties of a wide palette of word meanings and their shades, with the help of which pragmatic meanings are simulated, primarily for the grammaticalization of the category of evaluation.

In contemporary Ukrainian linguistics, the theory of ego-text is actively developing, projected onto the study of the heritage of refined linguistic personalities, among which Ivan Franko belongs. The study of ego-text contributes to understanding the nature of personal linguistic space, the uniqueness of language thinking, linguistic creativity, communicative strategies, and tactics that manifest themselves in the creation of personal intimate texts. Ego-text is a personal text created by a linguistic persona through the prism of their own self. It is based on a dialogue with the Alter Ego, one's own memory, and Others, and is grounded in personal experience acquired in the context of the individual's existence within a particular culture at a specific time and in a specific space. Ego-text captures manifestations of feelings, intentions, intimate thoughts, hopes, dreams, assessments, characteristic speech features, psychotype, and character. Ivan Franko's epigrams have not yet been the subject of research as representatives of the author's ego-text.

Purpose: Aspectually delineate the uniqueness of the Ukrainian-language epigrammatic discourse of Ivan Franko in light of the possibilities of its multi-aspect analysis, including within the framework of the theory of ego-text. The following tasks are aimed at outlining the research approaches to the interpretation of the epigram genre; elucidating the issues of Franko's epigrams and their addressees; characterizing the linguistic means utilized by the writer in the discourse of epigrams, highlighting the peculiarities of the semantic and pragmatic load of the epigrammatic discourse, the specificity of implementing the category of evaluation; generalizing the types of epigrams in their correlation with speech genres and identifying hybrid genres of epigrams created by Franko.

Results: The research conducted within the framework of the theory of ego-text is projected onto the study of Ivan Franko's linguophilosophy, as presented in the epigrams of the writer's linguistic persona as a particular type of discourse. This discourse reflects the author's skill in modelling figurative means (antithesis, epithet, metaphor, periphrasis, comparison, personification, allegory, macaronic speech, etc.), linguistic play, and in the unique actualization of expressive syntactic constructions. At the same time, the linguistic units of the epigrammatic text present individual-authorial intentions regarding the realization of their semantic and pragmatic load, the original framing of the category of evaluation. Ivan Franko's epigrams vividly reflect his intellectual and linguistic creative abilities. The writer verbalizes the speech genre of pithiness combined with communicative genres of recommendation, instruction, persuasion, reproach, wish, attention, etc.        A characteristic feature of the writer's language thinking is his high skill in modelling irony using the contrast technique. Franko created various types of epigrammatic genres, such as philosophical epigrams, dedicatory epigrams, descriptions of political, aesthetic, axiological, emotional-sensory orientation, self-critical epigrams, or self-irony epigrams.

Discussion: Ivan Franko's epigrams are grounded in his linguosophy, which is a result of his intellectual and linguistic creative activity, based on the peculiarities of his artistic language thinking that verbalizes the writer's worldview and moral convictions. The writer's thoughts are expressed in a corresponding critical-evaluative attitude towards people, society, relevant facts, and events. The criteria for evaluating individuals, their actions, and their deeds are provided by the writer's internal convictions, which are based on the manifestation of an axiological opposition of good and evil.

Among the principles of modelling epigrams are the deliberate selection of the subject of the epigram, the combination of conceptual, conceptual, and artistic visions; intellectual intolerance towards negative environmental facts, and pronounced wit.

Ivan Franko's epigrams are not only an embodiment of deep thoughts in a concise text but also a form of conveying personal, intimate impressions and thoughts in writing, demonstrating a high level of mastery of social experience, a wise way of solving cognitive, instructive, and moral-domestic tasks, and a critical attitude towards oneself. They serve as his signposts, admonitions, and cautionary formulas.
