Theoretical reflections of the past perfect tense in Ukrainian grammar books of the 19th century

THEORETICAL REFLECTIONS OF THE PAST PERFECT TENSE IN UKRAINIAN GRAMMAR BOOKS OF THE 19TH CENTURY

Abstract

Background: The development of grammar concepts in 19th-century Ukrainian linguistics presents an active process of theoretical reflection and codification of the verb system. The past perfect tense as a semantically marked yet functionally peripheral tense form, underwent a significant stage of conceptualization during this period. Analyzing Ukrainian grammars representing both Eastern and Western traditions provides a clearer understanding of how the temporal subsystem of the verb evolved and how grammatical terminology was shaped within the emerging national linguistic framework.

Purpose: The study aims to trace the formation and theoretical interpretation of the past perfect tense form in 19th-century Ukrainian grammars and to identify common and distinctive features in its treatment within both Eastern and Western Ukrainian grammatical traditions.

Results: The analysis demonstrates that throughout the 19th century, Ukrainian grammarians gradually established a four-part tense system consisting of present, past, past perfect, and future forms. The study identifies structural models of past perfect tense formation and explores its semantic nuances and variation in use. The establishment of the relevant terminology (давнопрошедший, давноминулий, передминулий) was influenced by the long-lasting interaction among Ukrainian, Latin, Polish, Church Slavonic, and Russian grammatical traditions. The past perfect tense ultimately acquired the status of an distinct grameme within the Ukrainian verb tense system, while the term peredmynulyi chas (“pluperfect”) became established in scholarly discourse at the beginning of the 20th century.

Discussion: The findings highlight the gradual evolution of the Ukrainian grammatical system under the influence of multiple linguistic traditions. Theoretical reflection on the past perfect tense demonstrates the transition from descriptive to analytical approaches in grammar writing and the formation of a distinct Ukrainian grammatical metalanguage. Further research should focus on comparative perspectives of the past perfect tense within broader Slavic grammatical traditions and its reflection in modern Ukrainian linguistic discourse.
