Red Velvet Cake is a classic Southern dessert known for its vibrant red color and subtle chocolate flavor. Moist and tender, it has a slight tanginess from the buttermilk and vinegar. Traditionally paired with a creamy frosting, this cake is a festive favorite for celebrations and special occasions.
Ingredients:
For the Cake:
1½ cups white sugar
½ cup shortening
2 large eggs
4 tablespoons red food coloring
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1 cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2½ cups all-purpose flour, sifted
1 tablespoon distilled white vinegar
1½ teaspoons baking soda
For the Icing:
1 cup milk
5 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup white sugar
1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
Beat sugar and shortening until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each.
Mix red food coloring and cocoa powder to a paste, then add to creamed mixture.
Combine buttermilk, salt, and vanilla extract in a separate bowl.
Alternately add sifted flour and buttermilk mixture to the creamed mixture, starting and ending with flour. Mix until just combined.
Mix vinegar and baking soda, then fold into batter.
Pour batter evenly into prepared pans. Bake 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes in pans, then cool completely on a wire rack.
For the icing, whisk milk and flour over medium heat until thickened. Cool to room temperature.
Beat butter and sugar until fluffy. Gradually add cooled milk mixture and vanilla, beating until smooth.
Frost between layers, top, and sides of cake.
