2 pounds baking potatoes, peeled and quartered
3 cloves garlic, peeled (optional)
1 cup milk
2 tablespoons butter
Salt and ground black pepper to taste
Place peeled and quartered potatoes and garlic cloves (if using) into a large pot.
Cover with salted water and bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
Reduce heat and simmer until potatoes are tender, about 15 to 20 minutes.
While potatoes cook, heat milk and butter in a small saucepan over low heat until butter melts.
Drain cooked potatoes and return to the pot.
Slowly add warm milk and butter mixture to the potatoes.
Mash potatoes using a masher or electric mixer until smooth and creamy.
Season with salt and pepper to taste.
