This spell creates a hand-shaped barrier made of force that provides cover to the spell caster against one creature.
When the spell is cast, the caster must name a target within range of the spell. This does not require line of sight or line of effect.
The barrier appears adjacent to the target and it's facing is determined by the location of the caster. ie. The barrier always keeps itself between the target and the caster.
When cast, the spell caster must decide on the size of the barrier. This can be as small as the caster's own hand or as large as 18ft. high by 10-ft. wide. The spell must be small enough to fit into the space next to the target. e.g. If the target is in a 5-ft. wide hallway, the barrier must be a maximum of 5-ft wide. Adjacent creatures will not hinder the creation of the barrier and will be shifted aside if necessary.
If the barrier is larger than the target, the barrier will provide 100% cover to the caster against non-melee attacks by the target.
A target that weighs less than 2,000-lbs. can use a complex activity to push against the barrier, moving at half speed toward the caster. A target that weighs more than 2,000-lbs. won't be slowed but must still use a complex activity to push the barrier.
If the barrier is too large to fit in an area, it will block the target from entering the space. For example, the caster is in a 5-ft. hallway and the target in a large room, a barrier larger than 5-ft. wide will prevent the target from entering the hallway.
A target that enters melee with the caster can attack the caster in melee but the barrier will provide cover. The amount of cover provided against the target's melee attacks is based on the difference in size. If the creature is larger than the barrier, the cover granted is 25%. If roughly the same size, the cover granted is 50%. If the barrier is larger than the target, the cover granted is 75%. If the barrier is much larger (double or more in both dimensions) than the target, the cover provided is 90%.
The spell will affect attacks by other creatures based on the facing and size of the barrier. If directly behind the target, the effect will be the same as on the target. If on either side, some cover will be provided (usually 50% but this is per the GM). A barrier can block entrance into an area if the target has the barrier pressed against it.
Attacking the Barrier
The barrier can be attacked with physical weapons (melee or ranged) and harmed with magic weapon (DR/+1).
The barrier has an AC 0 and can take as many hit points as the caster's maximum hit points before being dispelled.
The barrier is otherwise immune to magic except for dispelling effects which work normally.
Considerations
The barrier appears as a visible, lightly glowing disembodied humanoid hand floating in the air. The "hand" is translucent and can be seen through. The glow does not impact infravision or light areas enough to see.
The hand can block line of effect but not line of sight.
The barrier has no effect against anything coming from the caster's side of the barrier. Effects or attacks ignore it completely.
