The spell will detect one object named by the caster in the area of effect (if present).
Locate Object. [complex] (concentration) Each round not spent moving or performing other activities, the caster can determine whether the named object is in range and, if so, which direction it lies (in 3 dimensions).
Named Objects
The caster name a general object to be located: a sword, a staff, a ladder, a suit of chain mail, etc.
If more than one such object is within range, only the nearest object will be detected by the spell.
When naming a generic object, the most common form will be chosen (per the GM). Thus, naming a "sword" will cause the spell to detect the nearest metal sword (likely in the hand of one of their allies). Naming a "crown" will detect any golden "radiant crown" encrusted with gems but not diadems, coronals, or differently shaped crowns.
A unique object must be visualized by the caster with a reasonable level of detail, requiring the caster to be familiar with the item.

This spell will conceal an object from most divination spells or effects.
The object touched cannot be detected, sensed, or scryed by divination spells or effects. However, this does not affect spells such as commune, contact other plane, or similar magic.
This spell only protects the object from these effects, not those carrying it.
Examples
The thief, Arny, stole the "Eye of Set", a large ruby from their temple. He uses a spell scroll to cast obscure object as he makes his getaway. While the temple priests cannot find the gem using their magic, they scry the top thieves in the city (Arny is one) and note he is on a barge leaving the city. While they cannot detect the gem on him or even see it—assuming he often handles it greedily, his actions, including fleeing cause them to seek him out.
An assassin has an obscure object cast on her favorite dagger of venom before a job. She passes successfully through the tight security of the palace, including a magical detection ward that alerts the guards to those bearing magic emanations.
