This spell can magically alter the percieved dimensions of an area.
Spell Requirement. This spell requires that an earth elemental, under the control/influence by the caster, is on hand to power the distortion field. Once this spell is cast, the elemental will no longer seek to break control (if it did previously) and cannot be seized by an opposing spell caster (although the magic can be dispelled).
Area of Effect. Indoors or in constricted areas, the area affected by the spell is up to 100 10-ft. squares per caster level. If outdoors or in an otherwise large open space (per the GM), the area affected is up to 300 10-ft. squares per caster level. Thus, a 10th level caster can affect an area of up to ~207 acres (9,000,000 sq ft.) outside or up to 1,000,000 sq ft. indoors. Areas to be affected must have line of effect to the point of origin of the spell.
The spell can cause one of two effects, named by the caster when the spell is cast.
Half Distance. All areas affected are treated as if half the actual area. Thus, movement through such areas occurs at double speed and areas of effect or ranges are effectively doubled.
Double Distance. All areas affected are treated as if double the actual area. Thus, movement through such areas occurs at half speed and areas of effect or ranges are effectively halved.
Visual Effect. The spell has no visual impact on the area affected. Thus, the area looks to be the same dimensions, but creatures moving through them feel as if they are moving at half speed or double speed. Thus, grid maps won't change. Note that this effect never affects height of an area, only length/width. A true seeing effect will note the presence of an earth elemental spread throughout the area in addition to the magical aura.
Duration. The duration of this spell supersedes any magic used to conjure the elemental. Once this spell expires, the elemental returns to it's own plane (or from whence it came).
Material Components. A handful of clay. The component is consumed in the casting. Cost/Scarcity. Free/Common.
Known Substitutions. None.
