This spell creates illusory duplicates of the caster that confuse those attempting to attack or target the caster.
An illusionist creates 1d4+1 illusionary images in addition to the caster.
A magic-user creates 2-5 images in addition to the caster, determined as follows—Roll a d% when the spell is cast: 01-25=2 images; 26-50=3 images; 51-75=4 images; 76+=5 images; Add +1% per caster level of the magic-user.
The images are exact duplicates of the caster and cannot be discerned as fake (even if attempting a disbelief save).
Each seems to be taking a random action (casting a spell, parrying, drinking a potion, etc.) so it's not clear what the caster's action is. Each image can make sounds that appear to be real. Each image appears true even against those using only hearing or scent. A creature using non-magical echolocation (or those immune to illusion/phantasm spells) will ignore the spell.
All physical attacks (even magical attacks that use an attack roll to strike the caster) must select the target at random from among the caster plus the number of current images. Even if the true caster is noted, the images shift in and out causing each separate attack to select the target at random (inter-round or round to round).
Any physical attacks that occur at the same time could strike the same image. For example, a caster with 3 images that flees melee with 3 ghouls will allow the ghouls their free attacks. However, the ghouls free attacks will all occur simultaneously so all have equal chances to attack any images and even if the first ghoul destroys an image, the remaining ghouls will have the same chance to attack the same image (as the attacks occurred in the same segment).
For random target determination due to firing missile weapons into a melee, count each image as one creature (of the appropriate size).
In terms of melee facing rules, images are not counted against the number of opponents fighting a creature in melee.
While an illusory image remains, the caster, no matter what their action, is not considered immobile. For example, if the recipient is casting a spell (or is entangled, or prone, or the like), they may lose Dexterity adjustments (or shield bonuses) to armor class, but opponents will not gain bonuses to attack as if the caster were immobile (even though they are, in fact immobile, due to the illusionary power of the spell).
Any effect that targets a "creature" (or humanoid, etc.) will target the caster normally (e.g. magic missile, sleep, slow, hold person, etc.), ignoring the spell.
Effects that target an area will ignore the effects of the spell (including if if the caster is in melee and the spell bisects the melee). Images are unaffected by area attacks such as these (e.g. web, fireball, lighting bolt, etc.). Images may appear wounded or affected by magic effects (on fire, entangled, etc.). Images are never counted as a possible target for area effects that bisect a melee.
Each image reacts to attacks as per the caster and will have the caster's armor class (even if armor, Dexterity, magic, or circumstantial bonuses adjust).
Even if a caster becomes unconscious or paralyzed, the images will continue to operate around them. The caster cannot be targeted with death blow attack or coup de grace attacks while the spell operates and attacks against a prone or otherwise immobile spell caster must roll to hit their base AC (without shield or Dexterity adjustments).
Any successful strike against an image will destroy it.
