Alteration
Level Magic-user 5
Components V, S, M
Casting Time 5 segments
Range 30-ft.
Area of Effect An opening 5-ft. wide by 8-ft. high by (up to) 10-ft. deep
Duration 60 rounds plus 10 rounds per caster level (D)
Save nil
This spell creates a temporary hole in a vertical wall.
The opening can be made through any vertical wall made from wood, plaster, or stone (or combination of those).
The area of effect must be free of (non-wall) obstructions. If any part of the wall (in the area of effect) contains mechanisms or objects attached to it, the spell will fail (ie. a door). Fasteners are not included as an attached object (nails, spikes, etc.) but, for example, a winch would as would a mechanism such as a hidden crossbow or dart trap.
The magic of the spell is such that it does not weaken stuctures while in effect.
The opening won't otherwise hinder the passage of creatures or elements. For example, if water existed on one side of the wall, it would displace as expected (and if the "wall" were at the water-line of a ship, the ship would likely sink quickly).
If any creature is in the space created by the passwall spell with the duration expires (or the spell is dispelled), that creature must make a Dexterity save vs. Poison or become entombed in the wall when it reforms (save avoids). While this wont kill or even harm the creature, if completely covered, they may suffocate per the GM. Depending on the width of the wall, the creature may or may not be able to extract itself (and, if so, the magic will fill the gap even after the duration expires).
Limitations
The wall must be at least 5-ft. wide and 8-ft. high to be affected. It can be thicker than 10-ft., such that multiple applications of this spell could be used to form a tunnel of sorts.
While the targeted wall area does not need to be perfectly vertical, this spell will fail if cast on on a horizontal surface (floor).
Knowledgable builders can treat walls, doors, and/or mortar with special (expensive, rare) substances that can render the surface immune to this spell.
Material Components. A pinch of sesame seeds. The component is consumed in the casting of the spell. Cost/Scarcity. Free/Common.
Known Substitutions. None.
