The spell will detect emanations of Evil from any strongly aligned creature or object.
Detect Evil. [innate] (concentration) The caster can turn and detect and pinpoint the location of any Evil emanation in the area of effect. The spell allows detection beginning at the end of the round it was cast.
Physical objects, coverings, or structures will not limit the detection ability (with the exceptions noted below) but do limit the ability to clearly see the source of the emanation.
Detect Charm (Cleric Only). [innate] (concentration) When casting the spell (and only the spell/incantation, this is not available to those using detect evil as an ability), the caster can instead use the spell to detect creatures under the influence of a charm effect by an Evil creature. This includes supernatural effects such as domination (cf. vampire) as well as [charm] spells. In this case, up to one affected creature in the area of effect can be detected per round to a maximum of 10 such creatures per casting.
The degree of Evil will be detected:
Faint
Moderate
Strong
Overwhelming
Cleric Version.
If overwhelming, the cleric can detect the general bent (Lawful, Neutral, or Chaotic) on a roll of 10% per caster level (a roll of equal to or under succeeds).
A cleric can also detect the general nature of the Evil:
Expectant
Gloating
Malignant
etc.
What Emanates an Aura of Evil? (examples with relative strength)
Unholy water (faint)
Evil-aligned clerics of 8th level or higher (moderate to strong)
Evil-aligned intelligent swords (moderate to strong)
Evil (magical) religious objects or fonts (strong)
Evil-aligned undead (strong to overwhelming)
Extra-planar creatures from evil-aligned planes (strong to overwhelming)
Evil artifacts (overwhelming)
Limitations. Some barriers will block the detection altogether: Any amount of lead; 3-ft. of solid wood; 1-ft. of stone; or 1-inch of metal (of any kind).
Material Components. (Cleric) The cleric's holy symbol.
Known Substitutions. None.
