The spell will detect the presence of magical emanations from spells, spell-like abilities, and magical items in the area of effect.
Detect Magic. [innate] (concentration) The caster can turn and detect and pinpoint the location of any magic aura in the area of effect. The spell allows detection beginning at the end of the round it was cast.
Physical objects, coverings, or structures will not limit the detection ability (with the exceptions noted below) but do limit the ability to clearly see the source of the emanation.
If the source cannot be seen, direction is noted. If a source can be seen, the number of auras can be counted.
The emanation will be noted as being dim or strong. In this case, single-use items (scrolls, potions, etc.) or spells with duration less than permanent will be "dim". Otherwise, magic items with permanent dweomers (items with +'s, charged items, items without charges, etc.) or spells with a duration of permanent will radiate an aura that is "strong". Mage spell books will detect as "dim" magic. For charged items, the number of remaining charges has no bearing on the emanation level.
Magic-user Version.
This version of the spell works as above but is much more sensitive. The emanations will be noted as being dim, faint, moderate, strong, very strong, or intense. The rating is per the GM, but in general:
Dim. 1st-2nd level non-permanent spells; Mage spell books;
Faint. 3rd-4th level non-permanent spells; Magical potions, oils, ointments, or scrolls (any).
Moderate. 5th-6th level non-permanent spells; Most magic items containing charges;
Strong. 7th-8th level non-permanent spells; Permanent spells under 6th level. Most permanent magic items (including weapons or armor with +'s). Divine fonts or holy/unholy areas (per the GM).
Very Strong. 9th level non-permanent spells; Permanent spells over 5th level. Permanent magic items with an XP award of 5,000 or more. Unique or intelligent magic items as designated by the GM.
Intense. Avatar-level magic or artifacts (if any emanation is apparent at all).
Detect School of Magic. In addition to magic strength, the magic-user version of the spell has a chance to detect the school of magic.
This chance is equal to 10% per spell caster level. If multiple schools of magic are present, each must be checked separately and the spell caster will not know if a roll was failed. If not listed in the description of an item, the school of magic will be determined by the GM.
Limitations. Some barriers will block the detection altogether: Any amount of lead; 3-ft. of solid wood; 1-ft. of stone; or 1-inch of metal (of any kind).
Material Components. (Cleric) Holy (unholy) symbol. (Druid) Mistletoe.
Mid-summer Mistletoe. Area of effect extends to 50-ft. long and duration is 15 rounds (C). Borrowed/Holly/Oak leaves. Area of effect extends to 20-ft. long and duration is 5 rounds (C).
Known Substitutions. None.
