Scotland1

This document was compiled by Clas Glenning from reliable sources covering the game of football in Scotland. Thanks to Jack Rollin, Claudio Nicoletti, Wikipedia and RSSSF. Also thanks to Rumwold Leigh of London, England for clarifying the business surrounding Clydebank and to Bob Bath and Markus Schaal for pointing out needed corrections. The table was completely overhauled in January 2020. The 2019/20 season was halted in mid-march due to the Corona Pandemic. The standings at the time was later declared final. SCOTLAND-1.xlsx

Notes:

The league originally consisted of 11 teams when it started 1890-91, but Renton was expelled after five matches after having played a match against a professional side (St. Bernhard's thinly disguised as Edinburgh Saints), which was not allowed in those days. The games they had played were expunged. The championship games (Dumbarton - Rangers 2-2 1890-91 and Celtic - Rangers 2-1 1904-05) are counted in the tables above as they were championship deciders. Dumbarton and Rangers jointly won the championship 1890-91 following the tied game mentioned, but that is another matter! 1899/1900: The 8th place playoff between St. Bernhards and St. Mirren (1-2) is counted in the table. During the second world war there was no official championship. That's the reason why the seasons 1939-40 - 1945-46 aren't counted in the table above. Also there was no single first level which covered the whole of Scotland. The teams played in regional groups. Morton and Hearts played each other only once in the 1915-16-season. The games between Dundee FC and Ayr United in the 1921/22-season were both played in Dundee for some to the author unknown reason. Rangers had 10 points deducted during the 2011/12-season for entering into administration. Celtic had four points deducted in the 1890/91-season for rule infringement. Third Lanark had four points deducted in the 1890/91-season for rule infringement. Gretna had 10 points deducted during the 2007/08-season for entering into administration. Cowlairs had four points deducted in the 1890/91-season for rule infringement. Hearts of Midlothian had 15 points deducted during the 2013/14-season for financial irregularities. Dundee United had three points deducted during the 2015/16-season. Third Lanark AC prev. Third Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers FC. Note: The first Clydebank club folded in 1931. The 2nd one began operations in the 1960s and folded in 2003. They had no connection with each other.
