Dear Leawood Families,
August has been a month of discovery, new learning, and relationships for our students and staff here at Leawood Elementary School. The staff has done a tremendous job not only sharing expectations of the class but also building these expectations together and creating a sense of community. In one of our first staff meetings, I proposed that we focus on “connection before curriculum.” While both are equally important, students feel more comfortable challenging themselves with their learning if those relationships and the connection with the teacher are already formed. Connection is the keystone to building a solid education.
I also want to take a moment to thank this community for the generosity of their time and dedication to this school. Many of you have certainly come through with your volunteerism. Whether it was by attending our first PTSA meeting, volunteering in the classroom, or helping with the beautification of the school, your efforts have not gone unnoticed. A special thanks to our PTSA Board, Melissa Kohn, Deb Martinez, and Amanda Garvey for all their planning and effort to have a great launch to the 2024-2025 school year! Also to the Loerzel, McManus, and Perry families for their help with painting the columns and the Leawood sign. We will have another Community Engagement opportunity on September 4th at 4 pm to finish the columns and paint the blue flower pots. Please email me if you are interested in helping.
Today, Friday, August 30th we celebrated our first Spirit Day of the year. Overwhelmingly, the students came through, showing their support for the school by wearing their Leawood gear or by wearing blue. The virtual store will be open until September 15th. We are planning on opening another store in the fall with some winter gear.
Let us as a community continue to take pride in our lion pride!
Thank you, and feel free to reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.
Your Proud Principal,
Kevin Kolasa
